Kenny Loggins is underrated IMO. Don’t Fight It with him and Steve Perry is a great song with two of the best male rock vocalists. Among the female vocalists, I’m partial to Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt. Whenever I Call You Friend with Loggins and Stevie is one of my favorites. Linda Ronstadt had great range, starting with her Stone Poneys songs. IMO she’s the godmother of female rock singers.

And you only know the beginning of it. I listen to just about everything, classical, folk, world music. I don't worry much about genre.
Everything but mainstream it would seem. Not that I don't dislike a lot of mainstream it's just funny the stuff you're oblivious to and the obscure stuff you aren't oblivious to lol.

I listened to mainstream when I was growing up. Rarely a mainstream song came out that I liked. For instance "White Rabbit" was very popular, and I thought it very clever. I liked Beatles music, and that was very popular. After a while I tuned off to popular music because I didn't find much that was original to me (that doesn't mean that there isn't good music out there) and became more interested in folk music and foreign music. I have also always been interested in religious music. I have never really tried to analyze why that happened. I have a brother who is a musician and writes and performs classical music. This and traveling to foreign countries have probably been the most influential in my musical tastes. He stays current on modern music and sometimes I consult him. He is what you call eclectic in terms of his tastes.

This thread went from best rock singer based on ability and morphed into favorite rock singer. Either way is fine. You guys have named a lot of good ones.

To quote my OP: "Who do you pick as your top Rock vocalist?"

This is about who you pick, like, believe is your top Rock-ish vocalist not limited to actual apex technical vocal ability...though not excluding it either. It has been pretty informative for me and fun reading all the thoughtful replies!

Great pulls

Zander, if you don't know how good he is, would suprise you. Very underrated.

Sometimes I just sit and watch Cheap Trick videos and live performances on YouTube. One of my favorite bands, but not so much for the music as they are just a quintessential Midwest band and if you don’t at least relate to Cheap Trick in at least some minor way then you aren’t a midwesterner. I feel the same way about Smashing Pumpkins. Just the themes and the vibe of emoeccentricity really speaks to what it is to be like 13-35 years old in any Midwest city of 50k+ population. I kind of describe it as a “Rougher than a rockstar rockstars”. Like if Robin Zander had been a little prettier he would have been the 4th BeeGee, or if Rick Nielsen didn’t dress like he did and have his particular peculiarities he would have been playing in Journey.

This is my opinion and feelings on the matter of course. The same band can speak to many people in many different ways which is what makes music one of the best things we have going in this world.

Gonna agree with the earlier poster with Staley and Cornell. Chris Cornell’s solo stuff just shows his range compared to what he did with Soundgarden. Same with Staley with Mad Season.

Cornell’s live performances covering Thank You and Nothing Compares 2 U are amazing. Plus the cover of Billie Jean in studio with the way he completely changed that song with the tempo.

And of course Staley on their Unplugged album (still my favorite AiC album) was outstanding.

For contemporary vocalists, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys is my personal favorite.

Freddie Mercury. End of discussion. There is no debate that the best combo of rock singer, frontman/woman, and showman. His control, range, timbre, energy, etc is not matched

Watch the Live Aid concert -- he's in complete control of >100,000 people. And holy shiite does that dude have range. Check out the end of Radio GaGa at about 09:30 in the video.

And, may I add, he did Live Aid against his doctor's orders. Was having throat issues (nodules, I believe) but gave it his all.
