I am confused by this story mainly this part -

Michael and Kristine Barnett claim the 8-year-old daughter they adopted is actually an adult and tried to kill them.

The couple had the girl’s age changed to 22 before leaving for Canada in 2013.

The couple divorced in 2014, four years after adopting the girl. The Journal & Courier said a doctor examined the girl in 2010 and deemed her 8 years old.

This feels like a Rob Schneider movie just waiting to get made.

Horribly written article that made the timeline confusing. I think this is the order of events:

1. Adopted her and took her to the doctor for an exam. Doctor tells them she is 8 year old. Or, maybe the doctor told them this before the adoption went through?

2. They begin to realize she is not 8, but an adult with dwarfism.

3. They changed (legally?) her age to 22 so they could abandon her legally.

4. The move to Canada.

I think it was something along those lines. Those few sentences in the article jumped around the time line 3 in a way that was very confusing.
