I think that this is an important question we need to ask ourselves. I think it is part of what is causing a lot of the vitriol between certain groups. As some others said I think we just have groups who have different views of what our program status is.

My breakdown of the groups are as follows so hopefully we are on the same page.
  • Top 10: Blue Blood
  • 10-25: consistent tourney team with occasional runs
  • 25-35: regular tourney team who regularly wins one game
  • 35-50: semi regular tourney team
  • 50-70: occasional tourney team
  • 70+: doormat
EDIT: More clarification

“Today, past seasons or future seasons? This makes no sense if its just what you WANT it to be.”

Apparently I wasn’t clear. The question is what type of program are we. AKA where are our expectations for a program.

given the historical data of the last 7-8 years, apart from last year we have been safely in the tournament each year, with multiple years as a 5 seed or higher, and multiple years in the Sweet 16. We've finished every year except last year ranked in the top 25 in the final AP poll. Recruiting wise, we have consistently landed top-100 players each class with occasional borderline- McD's AA's. Given all this, I think it's most accurate to call ISU a 10-25 team.

25-30. Made the tournament 7 of the last 8 years, and had 2 sweet 16 runs in that time. Gotta perform better in the tournament if you want to be in that 10-25 range

Even with explanation, the range seems too big for the options.

I think we are currently 25-35, but I think it is not a stretch for fans to expect a 10-25 program.

The only aberration to our current 25-35 ranking was last season. I chose to ignore it as Prohm has gone primarily the high school recruiting route so there was going to have to be a down year in there.

I think you are missing a segment.

Top 5 = Blue Blood (KY, Kansas, Duke, NC)
6-15 = consistent tourney team with realistic national title potential on occaison

Based upon my revised strata we should ASPIRE to be 6-15 but we are currently at your 25-35 strata.

Serious question...do we feel KU is still a Blue Blood? Certainly not Top 5 as far as post season goes.

Yes, but not at the level of Duke, UNC, or Kentucky. They're on their own level. I'd put KU right below them.

Blue blood probably needs defined. According to CF there are about 15 Blue Bloods.

I’d be more interested to see where people think KSU falls on this poll.

If you base it on high end accomplishments, Elite 8 (2018)and Regular season title (2019)then KSU is in the 10-25 range much more than we are.

Blue blood probably needs defined. According to CF there are about 15 Blue Bloods.

Blue bloods:
Kentucky
Duke
UNC
Kansas

Blue blood has-beens:
Indiana
UCLA

"Purple bloods" (not historically dominant enough to be blue blood but usually pretty solid and in the national conversation):
Michigan
Michigan State
Arizona
Villanova
Syracuse
UConn
Louisville
Florida
Gonzaga

With sustained success and more tournament success, we could potentially work our way into that purple blood group. But we have work to do.
