Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

In 2014 and 2015, ISU Basketball was nationally relevant, Hilton was ROCKING, and we at one point achieved a 3 seed. In 2014, ISU got beat in the Sweet 16 by UConn (eventual NCAA champs) by only 5 points. We were on the verge of creating a consistently relevant program. Fred left, but JP made...

Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

If true, it is a weak hire. If you want to build momentum in a slumping program, you don't quickly hire a .500 coach from a mid major program. For crying out loud, are we Iowa State or Indiana State? It looks cheap and third tier.....I remember the late 70's ISU Basketball. Johnny Orr built...

Anyone else hearing that JP has already decided Prohm is coming back?

There was some talent. McDermott failed at getting it done in Ames, but certainly has been successful elsewhere. His style of play coming out of the Valley was much more conservative.

Coach McDermott is a good coach who struggled to get a quality Big 12 roster. He has had success in the Valley and Big East. Doug McDermott was a great high school and college player. Great skill set and ability to create his own shot. He has below average athleticism for the NBA. He struggles...

Perhaps only 2 high impact major conference players. There are 5-7 players a year that can contribute.

I do agree that Big 12 basketball is certainly more athletic and faster than the Big 10 and Missouri Valley (duh). Top to bottom, I believe it is often THE most athletic basketball conference. I am not arguing for Iowa's roster or UNI's roster. However, I think are some kids from each of those...

Anyone else hearing that JP has already decided Prohm is coming back?

Dude, I've forgotten more about basketball than you'll ever comprehend. I'm just too lazy to argue with rubes. You are the one who understands bending over. Don't bother to lube up.....

I never said I believed either Jacobson or DeVries were available or interested in a new opportunity. If you think there is no Iowa talent, just read the UNI or Iowa rosters. I'm not just talking 5 star, top 100 recruits, but solid role players who add depth and upperclass leadership to a...

I've been watching this thread for weeks and just want to add my two cents. I don't think it's going to be Freddie; you can't catch lightning in a bottle twice. I like both DeVries and Ben Jacobson. Why? Both love the state and could recruit top Iowa talent. Don't underestimate the cohesive...

    Does anyone remember Hercle Ivy?

Well Cyclone fans, this has been fun. Life and time are relative, and I'm sure many of you are wondering why some old geezer like me would open an old post. I wanted to honor my friend Jim Murphy, who has had such a profoundly positive effect on my life. I would be remiss if I didn't mention my...

    Does anyone remember Hercle Ivy?

When Johnny Orr first arrived in Ames, I saw him parking a big black Lincoln on Lincolnway near the ISU Bookstore. I was walking west on the north side of the street. When he got out of the car, I yelled "Go get em Johnny!" In typical Johnny Orr fashion, and with that raspy voice, he pumped his...

Fowler relocated back to Kentucky where he was employed in some capacity in the horse racing industry. Tragically, he died in 1988 at the age of only 31. I believe the cause was a heart attack.

    Does anyone remember Hercle Ivy?

I was lucky enough to meet and hang out with Ness a little the summer of 79. We would shoot and run at state gym. Ironically, it was the hot hand of Ness who defeated my high school (Atlantic) in the State Championship game at Veterans in 77. He poured in something like 40 points. I had already...
