Related to using Starlink for tailgating. Has anyone used their home WIFI internet to stream at games?

I have Verizon (but T-Mobile works the same) and the gateway is an 8 x 6 x 6 cube so very moveable. Does the gateway re-calibrate if location changes to pick up WIFI towers near stadium? Or does Verizon/T-Mobile restrict to a home location.
Great question. I don’t know the answer, but am an interested party for sure. I don’t even have Verizon or T-Mobile, but I am strongly considering it. I have CenturyLink (only option for us, until recently…T-Mobile is now available in our area) and CenturyLink sucks balls.

CAVEAT: Apologies to anyone with emotional ties to CenturyLink. I just can’t stand it. Hardly works and the customer service is awful.

I have had Verizon WIFI at home since last fall (when it became available) and it works great for me at $50/month. Not a gamer and just use for streaming TV and surfing the net. My dad has had T-Mobile for about 2 years and his uses are same and found to also be a great option for $50/month.

I just shake my head at Mediacom. They jacked up price of my service for 3 years and wouldn't listen to my requests "for a deal" because they knew my location only allowed 2 choices- Mediacom and Centurylink. Now, I get direct mail pieces at least 2x a month asking me to comeback with some great deal for a year. Mediacom would have to PAY ME to comeback at this point!!

I did a little research and TMHI (at least…didn’t check Verizon because it’s not available for me yet) is not meant to be mobile, but seems RV’ers have had at least some luck moving it around with them.

It’s apparently supposed to be set up to with a dedicated gateway using the closest TM towers to your registered residence, I guess.

I just haven’t been able to determine if there is a real geo-lock or if TM is just saying it’s not meant to be moved because they can’t guarantee it will work everywhere, you know? They really can only speak to your registered/home location.

I went through this same decision last year for tailgating. Had a portable DISH set up but was intrigued by the Starlink ROAM plan. We used it all camping/tailgate season last year and it was fantastic. Never had any delays or interruptions during games and you can turn it on and off as needed (per month basis) like dish. We have the Gen2 system. I turned it "off" last November after tailgating was over and just now turned it back "on" for the season. Had to go through about 30 min of updates to start, but now we are ready for camping and tailgating!

We will probably use it for a few more years before upgrading to see how they improve things as they are already on Gen 3.

What TV service did you use to watch games? I'm just about ready to pull the trigger, but I still have Mediacom cable at home. So, I think I may also cut the cord and go with a streaming service at home and at the tailgate.

We have it at our house and love it.

BUT if there's a problem there is no customer service and it takes forever to get things corrected.

For example when our house got hit by lightning it ruined the Starlink Power box. We had to go in the the account and file a ticket. 2 days later they responded with trouble shooting things they wanted me to do. I did them and still nothing. Relayed my findings and 2 days later they gave me more trouble shooting to do. I flat out told them resetting it isn't going to work because they power box is fried and I know this because there is no power light. Even sent them a pic. Finally they agreed to send us new hardware, but it was a lower level hardware than we had upgraded to 6 months ago.

Other than that **** the internet is great.

Interesting. I may want to hear more about this tonight if I make it to your race.

We use YouTube TV and then have ESPN+. We stream at home so just log into our accounts remotely.

So, are you asking if you can trust Verizon for wifi at the stadium? Verizon gets max'd out on gamedays. That's why I'm jumping right from DISH to Starlink. Verizon was never even a consideration.

I love Century Link … $55 per month and hardly any problems with service.

I’m glad it works for you. Curious where you are (I’m not asking you to post that though), because it doesn’t work for **** where I am and I know for a fact it’s because they have had no competition where I live.

I talked to a tech a few years ago who was assigned to my ticket to have the top tier residential package set up. He told me not to do it because the wiring where I live is shot. He almost went as far as to apologize, because he said CL knows it but they aren’t going to do anything about it. He said it would be a waste of my money and his time to upgrade my service because it wouldn’t do anything.

It’s been great for us ….. speeds that are good enough for steaming, work from home, and gaming teenagers, at the same time. The latter ***** about the ping, lol.

It would be a great way to stream YTTV in Ames on game days. And any other RV outings.
Does it work well with downloading porn? Asking for a friend.

I live in Johnston in a newish developement. Probably works well for me because my neighbors are all using Mediacom.
Gotcha. I live in Runnells. Until recently, when T-Mobile became available, the only option I had other than CLink was HughesNet. I’m sure StarLink is probably available by now, but the initial equipment cost is crazy to me, and the monthly cost is high too. $500 for the equipment, plus $150/month?

I think I can get T-Mobile for the same price as CenturyLink, with no equipment fee.

Yes or even T-Mobile. I realize cell reception can be a struggle, but not sure if a gateway device has better chance to pull in a signal over a phone from a hardware standpoint.

I know the OP was asking about tailgating but bumping this thread for home Starlink service.
I'm considering signing up until fiber is installed to my neighborhood (which may still be a year away).

If you have it, where did you install the receiver? The roof seems like the best place but I'm not a fan of drilling holes in my shingles. Then how did you get power to it?

Can you return the equipment for any sort of refund when you cancel the service?

They have a sale until Oct 5th. The standard equpment is down to $299. It looks like I can get an additional $100 off for being a low usage area or something.

Has anyone tried the $50/month 50GB mini-pack for tailgating? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay for the $150/month unlimited service for the tailgate season?

@Cysck I have noticed a lot of the national touring racers a starlink dish they set up. Not sure the plan they have but they are using it in a mobile manner.

A 1080p stream will likely take at least 2GB of data per hour. 4K resolution would be close to 10GB per hour.
