For sports betting.

I wonder if it was from an Iowa DCI investigation.

I’m kidding, but this is a bad look for the MLB to have an umpire even being investigated for sports betting after suspending a player for life just a couple weeks ago and the whole Ohtani saga.

Well, he is from Iowa (Urbandale grad). Maybe more of that DCI geofencing at work?

Seriously, Hoberg appears to be one of the highest-rated MLB umps by the metrics of balls and strikes, and Umpire Scorecards rated his work in Game 2 of the 2022 World Series as a “perfect game” (zero missed calls behind the plate) - the first time any umpire hit that level in over 18,000 games rated.

Sure doesn’t appear there’s anything fishy going on.

Rumor I heard is that he was being big numbers on other sports. Didn't ever bet baseball but it's still, obviously, not a great look.

Won't cost him his career but it'll probably cost him ever being a Crew Chief.

Turns out it did cost him his career. My brother said he was reffing a high school basketball game in Central Iowa a few weeks ago.

I don’t blame any sports league one bit for giving huge suspensions for gambling situations. If there is even an inkling of game fixing, that’s a big problem for a lot of people.

He can apply for reinstatement in 2026 it looks like.

And yet sports book and continual lines offered throughout any sporting event broadcast. I remember when Mantle and Mays were suspended for working at a casino post playing days. Before long, there’ll be a stadium built with a casino in it. Just a little hypocrite in my view.

Hypocritical in what way? Players can bet on any sport except the sport they are in.

You want players/umpires to be able to bet on games in their sport?

Well, if you are policing betting and discouraging it, let’s not have sports books at the ballpark. That would be a start. But it’s about the $$, I get it. Now we are saying you can bet on other sports, but not yours and it’s a “big story” when that line get crossed. Clearly there are addictive folks that can’t handle it and will crops that line.

End of day, and it’s not a shocker, there is little integrity left in sports.

Why should it be the ballparks job to enforce people being able to handle their business?

Betting is for the fans. Drinking in the fans. Smoking weed is for the fans. If you’re connected to any athletic program, college or pro or even high school, you simply can not put yourself in a position of judgement.

Probably the opposite. The “hypocrisy” is that the leagues are perfectly willing to get into bed with the gambling companies, but as soon as a player or ref/ump does, it’s an issue.

Would I call it hypocritical? Maybe, but I’d more likely say it was risky, idiotic, and playing with fire. The leagues need people to believe the games aren’t being influenced by gambling. If people think that they are, whether that’s true or not, it could be deadly to the league. But in spite of that, they are still willing to cozy up to gambling companies. Doing so makes it more likely that fans will think that the games are being influenced by gambling and that the players, refs, and coaches are being punished because they got aught, not because they did something wrong.

Also, while it isn’t the league’s responsibility to make sure people are betting responsibly. It is absolutely in their best interest to
