Has anyone had experiences, good or bad, meeting with a dietitian at Hy-Vee?

I asked my doctor's office for a referral to a dietitian, and I was told to go to Hy-Vee to meet with one. But I'm hesitant that meeting with a Hy-Vee dietitian would just result in being told why I should buy the most expensive items from the health section. (I'm not a big fan of Hy-Vee, admittedly.)

Unless anyone has found it beneficial?

I'd be skeptical of one employed by a store. But maybe it would be a good place to start. I looked up Hy-Vee dieticians, and I've heard a few of them speak at my workplace. They gave some great meal suggestions as I recall.

Your profile says you're in Ames. Mary Greeley has a nutrition education department if you'd rather go that way.

I've lost almost 60 pounds over the last 9 months using a variety of things. I've done a combination of high protein, lower carb, low sugar, strength training and walking. I also did intermittent fasting for the first 5 months.

The problem is that because I've lost fat all over my body and my wedding band is really loose on my finger. I was at a hotel pool last week and my wedding band almost slipped off. Any idea how much it costs to get a wedding band re-sized?

Google says cost to make it smaller can range from $30-60. I'd probably budget around that range (maybe a bit higher) just so there's no unpleasant surprise.

Hy-Vee's dieticians are registered dietitians so they are legitimate. From the people I've talked to that used them, the dietitian would give them a tour around the store and tell the client to focus on the outside of the store to avoid processed foods and such (we've heard this advice before). I would go in with a list of questions to ask so you get the most out of your session.

Examples:
Which so called "healthy" foods should you avoid? (something people think is healthy, but isn't)
Which foods are underrated when it comes to nutrition?
For various vegetables, how do they prepare them so they taste good and are still healthy.
How your meals should look so it has balanced nutrition? (what should be on your plate, how much of each food)
How to determine serving sizes of foods so you don't have to measure everything?

Mind if I ask what you are looking for out of meeting with the dietitian? As long as they are an RD it shouldn’t matter who they associated with.

@FriendlySpartan (or anyone else with similar experiences) I'm going to sports medicine in about two weeks but just assuming you know the exact problem I have based on my generally vague description and you likely not having much experience/certification officially in the PT field. :)

Can sciatica not be 'felt' like not much pain or discomfort but still affect a leg's ability to gain strength?

My calf can't turn the corner no matter if I rest it or do strengthening. It doesn't swell but does seem to have some pressure including my veins occasionally looking like varicose but seem to get better after some calf raises. I got a test done to rule out blood clots (no issues).

I stumbled around in a rocky stream two days ago with no problems which is fairly rugged/complicated movement but jogging in a run/walk work out brings back pain 2-3 days afterward. However, if I roll or massage the calf I don't feel the pain in the muscles.

TIA.

Ok so we need to get some terms sorted so I have an idea what you’re asking. Are you talking about the “ability to gain strength” as in the leg becoming stronger or just not causing pain? Two very different things. Have you been diagnosed with sciatica and given specific exercises/treatment for it? Can you elaborate on what “pressure” is and is it just in the calf?

Lastly the reason why running is going to cause you issue is due to the more dynamic movement then stumbling around the stream. Could also be due to a number of issues from your stride, to your shoes, to your gait, to even being harder if you are carrying extra weight.

When you go in to see the physician make sure you have those answers ready for them as well as make it very clear what your goal is or what outcome you are hoping for as they will ask.

Thanks to @KnappShack advice on Bulgarian split squats for a lower body exercise that helps strengthen glutes and is easy on the back, I found a good video from Jordan Syatt for Bulgarian split squats.

I landed on that page recently when looking for a dietitian. I completely misread it the information as I had to have a referral from my physician to meet with a dietitian. Which is why I messaged my doctor's office asking for a referral and was told to go to Hy-Vee.

I appreciate you sharing the page. It got me to take a second look. I've requested an appointment at MGMC.

I really don't have a plan and I definitely need one. I've never eaten healthy in my life. I'm actually shocked I've gotten away with eating this way as much as I have as I near the age of 40.

What I'm looking to get out of meeting with a dietitian is assistance in setting up an actual diet plan. I need assistance in knowing where to start.

I don't have a plan right now. Right now what I'm doing is really being observant of how often I eat in a day, and how much I eat. I used to snack 4,5, 6 times a day without thinking about how much that was adding up. Now I snack maybe once a day, and that will be apples with peanut butter.

Adding in upping how much I walk, these little changes I've made have helped as I'm under 250 lbs. for the first time since I can remember (possibly 10 years,) but I know these changes will only get me so far. I know I can be doing more. I just don't know where to go from here.

I've been taking creatine for about a week. When doing further research, there seems to be some concerns about about hair loss when taking creatine. The science says that hair loss with creatine is a myth, but i've read many that had hair loss soon after starting creatine. The two doctors I've listened to saying it was a myth were both bald so it didn't exactly increase my confidence.

I'm now questioning if the creatine benefits are worth the potential of losing/thinning of hair.

Also, I haven't been sleeping as well since I started creatine. Not sure if that is related or not.

There's a study that has shown a 50% increase in DHT during the loading phase. You could skip the loading phase and just take the standard scoop daily.

I personally put a ton of value in my sleep quality so I would stay away from something that had a heavy impact on it. Maybe lower your dose if it persists and see if you feel a difference.

Odd you say that. The sleeping part.

When I first started creatine I had very vivid and slightly disturbing dreams. I just dismissed it as coincidence

It didn't happen after a short time and it hasn't repeated after jumping on/off at times. Weird.

The main thing I noticed is weight gain. My weight jumped. I also seem to get more mental benefit than (potentially) physical

I didn't do a loading phase because I was worried that it would mess with my hydration and stomach so I'm good there. I don't have a family history of hair loss. I'm wondering if the creatine just speeds up the hair loss for those prone to it.

right now I'm doing 5g a day. I might decrease if I notice any issues pop up or the sleeping issues persist.

The warmer weather might be part of the reason for the poor sleep.

Can anyone tell me a spot in the CR area that has cheap day passes, like $5?

Just lifting mainly.

$20 is a bit much. The Y doesn't do them any more.

How did your appointment with the dietitian go?
Haven't had the chance to meet with one yet. Busiest time of the year at work, especially in my position. I'll be meeting with one in July.

Despite the long hours at work, I've been able to keep the weight I've lost off. I haven't lost anymore the past couple weeks, but I've managed to not put anymore back on, either.
