***Official 2024 Weather Thread***

I feel like Waukee has a forcefield around it.

The worst of the storms always seem to split around us.
Well thanks for jinxing us.

We are right off of 80 across from Rubes, so I'm always a little nervous since we're the "leading edge", but we've been lucky so far.

Hell, even if I do get back to sleep, I'll just get woken up again soon if the power comes back on and everything beeps.

Didn't seem like it got too wild in north Ames, edge of the bad stuff must have been right over the city.

Why does the weather app that comes on all IPhones always wildly differ from apps like 13 Warn Me? Like all night it kept saying only a 35% chance of rain for a couple hours this morning while the 13 app predicted big storms. Same with the last round. Is the IPhone weather app using a potato for its radar?

Ours definitely did around 5:10. Dogs were not impressed.

Hopefully you heard the sirens. Those are getting a workout this week.

Heard those but only after my mom got an alert on same phone that I have and woke me up.

If she hadn't woken up I could have even slept through sirens.

Can someone smarter than me explain how this works. The storms today were moving NE, but based on the direction of the trees blowing halfway over the wind was blowing to the SE. Is this just my eyes messing with me or is that a thing?

Straight line winds would blow the same direction as the storm is moving. If some rotation or swirling in the storm, you can see different “direction” of wind effect. I don’t have the correct terminology here, sorry.

I think storms generally have an inflow pulling in warm air and an outflow where cold air dragged down with rain and hail is expelled.

Where winds change speed and direction at different heights is where rotation can start and tornados form.

Advice needed. We have a 16 year old fence, which has never had issues until 2 months ago. 2 months ago we discovered that two posts, which were in cement, were breaking off. We had Des Moines steel fence come out and they said we had two bad posts and they would replace them for $480.

On Wednesday, they came out and replaced those two posts. This morning I look outside and these two panels have fallen down, which were right around the corner from a new post. The panels are facing east.

So, do you think the work they did caused this issue? Advice?

Who mows between the two fences?

Hard to imagine that working on separate part of the fence caused this issue. Not sure how far away that is from the repair, but I know from dealing with mine, when you have bad spots, it puts pressure on other parts of the fence too and they will eventually have problems if you don't address them.
