I wonder how well the other ports in the NE are going to be able to handle the traffic that would otherwise go into Baltimore. The Port of Baltimore is not small.
Based on Google Maps there are only a couple places to dock outside of the Key Bridge. The others (and there are a lot) are all inside. Next to no traffic in or out until the channel is clear.

That was my question. Where were the tug boats?
Exactly. Especially with this being a 300M vessel. It's shocking to me that it didn't have an escort at least into the Chesapeake. The channel doesn't look extremely wide or anything in the Patapsco River after glancing at some charts. Mind blowing.

Right, and those docks look like they're only set up for roll-on/roll-off. Actual container ships will have to go to another port entirely.

It's also a big cruise ship port. Makes me wonder what ships are trapped in the harbor until further notice.

Not sure if they fixed it but the East Dubuque bridge connecting Illinois always swayed if I drove on it.

It's a totally morbid thought, but I've spent more time this morning trying to figure if you'd have any chance at survival/how'd you die in a situation like this. Would the impact with the water shatter the windows/windshield so you'd have a chance to escape if you survived the fall? If not would your car just slowly fill with water? Is it deep enough the pressure would eventually break your windshield?

Just awful, pit-in-your-stomach type things to think about. But it's the exact reason I always breath a sigh of relief when I'm fully across a bridge.

For those of you who think this is a nightmare scenario you might want to contact your state legislator. Iowa LEADS THE NATION in number of structurally deficient bridges.

I don't think structural deficiency had anything to do with this collapse....

Best video explanation I have seen. It appears the boat had issues and would lose power on and off. (Bottom video of boat moving into and striking the bridge).

I’m going to wildly speculate that they don’t have the tug resources at 1am. Or the they just don’t do it in the first place. Which will now probably change, but too late.

Always roll the window down right away, electronics won't work long and the pressure as soon as you are underwater makes it near impossible to break the window.

The poster you responded to should correct his post also. Looking at the first article, 2/3rds are rural local roads which fall under county supervisors. There were some other rural roads for the next highest but I couldn't deduce who would be responsible for them. So contact your county supervisors first and then the state reps.

wow that collapsed really fast. Where those blinking lights that were ground level on the bridge construction workers? Didn't see any cars except for one on the far right that was entering just as it collapsed. Looks like it went into the water.

The Mythbusters on this one occupies a little nightmare filled corner of my brain. I got a set of those window breaker/seatbelt cutter things to put in each car's console.

There was a brief story on Inside Edition (my wife loves 'junk food news') about how those don't break windows like they used to - iirc the context was Mitch McConnell's SIL ending up in that lake in her Tesla.
