It doesn't give me confidence going forward. It says mediocrity is... OK?
This is the same guy that came in and said ******* programs are satisfied with 6-6. I miss that Matt Campbell.

I kind of wonder if MC is losing the players some now?

You think? I'd say the gambling stuff proves this current group of players dont respect him.

Can you imagine wasting multiple hundreds of dollars and something like 12 hours by actually going to the game?
Its one reason i dropped my season tix after 10+ years. Not the whole reason, but part of it. Even in a year when we had texas and iowa on the home schedule.

Really dislike that quote from Campbell. Finding positives is perfectly fine, but trying to make things sound okay after that last quarter of football is weak. He doesn't seem to have that killer instinct that most football coaches do. It's odd.
He does. Behind closed doors. He’s going to be as dainty as he can be to reporters but behind closed doors he’s not that way.

Exactly. That's why we only did runs and pints the second half against uni. Most teams would be trying to getting things figured out on offense.

Yep, I've come around on that myself. This team desparately needed some good tune-ups on offense, and that was a great opportunity wasted.

My opinion on Campbell is starting to turn, unfortunately. I really feel like winning, for some really strange reason, just isn't important to him. His goal is for the game to be played his way, regardless of the final outcome. He considers a game played his way a victory, even if the other team scored more points. . .

And to keep saying winning is hard at ISU is just a self fulfilling prophecy. You can't say that bull ****. It kills recruiting.

They have beaten repeatedly trying to play the same game as Iowa for years. Play as good as you’d like we’re 1-6 playing them
IMO this is the biggest issue. Our offense is Iowa’s EXACTLY what Iowa is built to defend. The recipe has been out there for years and teams like Purdue give Iowa fits. Spread them out and make Iowa defend the entire field. Nope not us, we are gonna run right formations because Campbell has a hard on for smash mouth football.

The TV announcers were just as flabbergasted about the clock management as the fans were.
When that last td drive started, I told everyone I hope this doesn't take 6 minutes to score that is what the Hawks want. Give up 3 and 4 yard plays. Nothing after that, just chew the clock defense. The talent or experience coaching level, whichever description you prefer, was evident the whole game.

I'd have to go back and watch again to see how many opportunities in terms of playcalling were really "missed" by the offense (as in throwing it more downfield and across the middle, etc.), but I have a hunch that it's not as many as some here would think. Iowa's defense remains very good at neutering the opposing offense and forcing the offense to take what's there or risk throwing into heavy coverage, which includes a group of very opportunistic defensive backs that can easily make you pay. Of course you can find specific plays where there was open space that wasn't utilized, but that doesn't mean that it always would have worked that way. For that reason, I'll reserve full judgement on the offense until they get into Big 12 play.

Obviously today was still frustrating, though. The lack of urgency on the fourth quarter touchdown drive was maybe the most frustrated I've been with Campbell and company. His game management leaves a lot to be desired. Like some have said, though, coaches have strengths and weaknesses. If the recruiting and player development get Iowa State back to the point of making bowls (which I still think they will, next year if not this year), then the lackluster game management will be something I'm willing to accept as a weakness of his.

I agree that we didn't have everything available to us all day long, but there were missed opportunities and in a game like this, you HAVE TO hit them. Iowa basically beat us on 3 plays yesterday. The 60 yard run and the 40ish yard pass play both led to points and the pick 6 essentially sealed it. Iowa made their handful of plays, and we didn't. Same as it ever was. Win in the margins my ass.

Campbell saying how proud he is and that this is our best effort against Iowa rings hollow with me. Talk about a low bar. This has been the turd that won't flush his entire tenure and as long as he is unwilling or unable to change his approach, the results will remain exactly the same.

Heacock has to be the most patient and forgiving person on the face of the earth. How he can continue to develop talent and create masterpieces on one side of the ball, only to watch an inept offense piss it away game after game is beyond me. That guy should have millions in his bank account and rings on a few fingers but instead chooses to stick around here and pray that we can somehow scratch out 3 tuddys so that Campbell can get to the postgame presser and throw around his catch phrases for 15 minutes. Unreal.

I've literally never been less happy to be in Ames than I was yesterday. Having the mouth breathers milling around all day yelling GO HAWKS at each other like a bunch of tourette's patients, knowing there's not a damn thing we're going to do to shut them up is getting really old. The good news is, we'll soon get an email or hear Pollard on some show saying how this is our fault. We're not giving enough to the Foundation or to the Collective, or we're not sticking around in the game long enough, or we're tailgating too long. Shut up and get back in line people. Meanwhile we've ruined one of the best tailgating scenes in college football so that we can have a few more places to buy a $10 beer and a $25 burger. So we got that goin' for us...which is nice.

Campbell doesn't seem to mind the early season losses. I think he uses them (and key plays like getting stuffed on 4th and 1) to motivate the players. It's worked in the past. Hopefully it will work again this season.
The problem with that is this isn't the NFL. For example the Chiefs loss to the Lions doesn't matter, they have 16 left and just need to make the playoffs. In college every game matters.

That eventually has to come up. Unless Rocco wins a ton this year then Kohl is starting next year right. He's too high of a recruit not to. Seems like one of them destined to transfer in this day and age. So if he's going to start next year, like mid season this year why not play him.

Nothing against Rocco. Not sure if it's him or calls that they never threw deep
Did you watch the UNI game? He isn’t ready. JFC Kohl is not the answer right now. Say what you want about Dekkers but he absolutely f*cked this team!

And more frustrating than that is the fact that our offense doesn't work especially well against teams not named Iowa, so even the reasoning of "Iowa is just a bad matchup for us" falls flat.

The lack of urgency is maddening. It's been around awhile now though. If you think back to Brock's senior year and all the slow starts, followed by furious late second half rallies that fell short....I don't know, it's like he always thinks we have 5 quarters or something.

Add to it the atmosphere in JTS has been killed by moving student section.

All in all yesterday was one of my least favorite ISU games of all time (and that’s saying something as a kid that went to most games in second half of 80s into 90s). I know the department needs money but it feels like everything that was good about Gameday gets gutted.

The negativity here is off the deep end.
This!! Sounds like a hawk message board. Give it a rest doomsdayers!!! Love all the Monday morning QB’s who watch a game and think they know all the answers. Didn’t realize Bill Belichick, Nick Saban (who lost last night) and the ghost of Vince Lombardi hung out on this message board.

Everybody is frustrated, but seriously folks, you don’t have the right answers. Stick to your day jobs!!!
