Fox is saying 49 deaths. I don't know if they really know, though. The plane hit a house -- they don't know if anyone was inside, right?

The flight was Newark to Buffalo. You would think that would be an hour -- tops.

Yeah, and stellar reporting by CNN: "The house was leveled." Well no **** Sherlock.

Prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The deaths have not yet been confirmed, but it would be a miracle if anyone survived this. Lets just hope that the house the plane crashed into was not occupied. It's been years since anyone has been killed due to a commercial airline crash.

What I don't understand is that the flight reportedly went down at 10:10pm ET ... yet it took close to 2 1/2 hours for this to hit the wires and the news channels.

That's what confused me, too

Man, I have to fly Houston - Buffalo on Continental in about two weeks.

Last month I flew Continental Denver to Houston 1 week after the Cont jet skidded off the Denver runway en route to Houston.

This is getting eerie.

Some snow/weather in the area...perhaps an icing issue?

Although, when is the last time there has been major problems with icing and commercial planes.

i though i heard them say strong winds may have caused the crash

I believe that winds and icing will be the causes. I just listened to the tape tape from Buffalo tower around the time that it went down. It suddenly disappeared off of the radar without any may day calls. All flights at the time reported icing and imc (instrument meteorological conditions).

Sad night for all, I would never stop flying though. Those involved have my thoughts and prayers.

I was flying to Louisville last night in a regional jet and we aborted landing about 200 ft off the ground due to the wind whipping us all over the place. We were about to the point of putting the wheels down and the person next to me was like "what the F, they can't be serious". I travel by plane about once a week and by far the freakiest incident I've experienced. Crazy, my wife is going to hate seeing this story, wish I hadn't told her about my flight.

I imagine that is quite scary. Although it is quite scary and dangerous, people need to remember that every pilot has to go to a "school" every 9-12 months for several days to go over procedures and practice these exact situations.

Well, I just figured the pilots didn't want to die either so they weren't going to land if they didn't think it was going to work.

Flying is one of the safest forms of travel... I've never flown (no opportunity to this point), but I wouldn't hesitate to do so.

The lovely and talented MrsPhaedrus is a pilot. Perhaps she might chime in on this topic, once she gets up this morning.

Myself, I've been in a number of ground and air incidents with aircraft. I think you'd be surprised how often no-one gets hurt.

BTW - MrsPhaedrus is the best pilot I know. She is good, because she realizes her limitations and never attempts to fly outside her own skillset. That, and she takes great pride in making perfect landings.
