Rumor is they hired a bunch of EX twitter employees that still had old laptops and phones. Big no no in the intellectual property space...

"Andy Stone, communications director at Meta, posted that “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”"

Which meta is denying fwiw.

We’ll see if anything comes of the demand letter, but just sending one doesn’t mean a lot
Yeah, I am not sure turning off peoples badges and firing them remotely was the right play lol leaves a lot of old company property out there.

I pulled the ripcord on Twitter quite a while ago, because of ... uhh ... yeah. I miss it though. Really made me feel informed on daily news - I never understood those who said it stressed them out, etc. Sort by chronological and follow people who aren't morons. Done.

There's a lot of hub bub this week about Threads, Meta's new competitor to Twitter. I'm not on it, but it sounds unfinished a bit cuz apparently they accelerated release due to Twitter's last flambé performance. I think it's an offshoot of Instagram but appears if you delete the Threads app, it also deletes Instagram. Also can't sort by chronological. Daddy Zuck gets to choose. No thanks. I don't have any Meta accounts.

Other upcoming companies:

Post - Focused on news, but I don't think that works longterm. Glorified RSS.
Hive - What?
T2 - Thought this one was interesting. Former Twitter peeps, but they are focused on being nice - not sure that works. Temp. name.
Mastodon - I understand it in theory, but where does the money come from? Confusing for average user.
Reddit - Burned LOTS of goodwill lately. Demanding unpaid moderators kiss their feet. Very leery now.
Bluesky - Feels like a Psyop using buzzwords about federated, la la la but there's something that feels off about it.
Nostr - For cryptobros.

I'm feeling itchy for something. Gotta have the critical mass. Thoughts?

Usually, I'm a big @Kagavi fan. But I didn't understand anything he wrote about these "upcoming companies."

CF is my social media. If there’s interesting tweets or news links, quite a few get posted on CF. There’s also enough “characters” in here to give the site… character...

I left Twitter a long time ago, and I don’t miss it.
I know I'm biased, but I'm the same way. If it's worthwhile, it'll end up on CF. While I have a Facebook and Twitter account, I've never tweeted and never posted anything to Facebook... nor have I logged into them since original signup (just wanted to stake my name so others didn't). They bring out the worst of society.

On a side note - I used to live for news, especially political and geopolitical. I could tell you everything going on in every corner of the world. But I can go to 3-4 websites and see that without getting bombarded with dumbass, uninformed opinions turned into supposed "facts".

I would venture to guess that the average American reads more misinformation than actual news on Twitter or Facebook every day and doesn't know the difference. That's scary.

Agree.

I'm going to stick to Twitter because that's where the people I want to follow (sports reporters, scores, gambling handicappers) are going to be. If that changes, I'll change.
Agreed and also until you can imbed on sites as easily as you can with tweets.

Totally agree. If it’s important in the world it will ride with important CF threads such as Casey’s Thin Crust, Anyone know this Des Moines Patio?, or the one about Hines’ wife pissing on a dead sparrow.

Creating "copycat" websites isn't a legal thing so the cease and desist is BS. Musk has no standing to sue and he knows it. Everything he does is for showmanship, ego, or money. This is for the first of the three. He's nothing more than an informed investor. This is the same guy that even sued Tesla to put him as a founder of the company when he was no such thing. He's a douche.

The way certain people treat him like a cult leader is beyond disturbing. He's proven he doesn't care about free speech and is nothing more than a far right-wing nutcase with a big bank account.
