You get one restaurant that’s closed in Ames to come back…

Kinda related, but where do the kids go to party these days. In my day all the Welch bars had lines every Fri/Sat night. Now

It was like 3 larges for $10.99? ish

I late 90s it was like that and dominoes matched the 3/10.99 deal.

Gumby’s had a decent deal on one pizza but hometeam and dominoes were the cheapest food in town if you got 3.

George was sick and died 05. It hung on for awhile, but once his kids took over it went south quick. Nostalgia and characfer couldn't be beat at the old spot, but food/quality remained consistent in early part of the move. Should've sold to manager he trained.

Eventually Gyro cart/flying burrito guy bought from his family after a few years. Turned into Battle Cry? Maybe had once, but was a shell of its former self.

Said manager is childhood friend of mine. I don’t think the food changed w move fwiw at least not right after the move.

Was that by Tip Top? My parents used to talk about that and when Hickory Park was over that area. (I remember when HP was Bonanza)

Kitty corner from it, SW corner of intersection.

Sat about 12 people

One menu item each day for 3.25

Kicker was a white piece of bread with smiley face impression

Wonderful home cooked meal
And the coldest bottles of beer in Ames!

Duh!
So many have already been named and I agree:
O’Malley McGees! Good food and great Margs
Battles BBQ - campustown gem
Lucalon’s(sp?) fish bowls! [I can’t believe I forget how to spell it, I worked at the sister spot: Pizza Kitchen’s]
Ruttles - good low key date spot

can I add Happy Joe’s? Damn I miss their Taco and Canadian Bacon pizzas!

Hickory Park 2.0 was on Duff too, just further North. It was dark and old school and awesome. HP3.0 is now a machine and great if you have kids, otherwise I’d rather go to Jethros or Cornbred.

Taco time from the 80s or taco time 2010? Big difference.

I only had it from probably 1995 to when it closed. The crisp meat were all I ever had along with krustos. I didn’t live in Ames though so I only had it every few weeks and didn’t notice the change everyone references.

Not exactly sure.
I'm going to go the Campus Town route and go with the Panchero's on Welch. The El Gordo was a thing of beauty and it's a shame that location ever closed.

Side rant: Panchero's switched to a new hot sauce 5 or 6 years ago and it just isn't the same. Why do places have to mess with a good thing?
Was the El Gordo the 2 pound burrito?

I think we (more I) was getting cases of Meister Brau long necks and red, white, and blue for 3.99. Basically an hour of work to get a case of beer. Got barley chunks once in a while, but that kept you from ordering pizza.
We’d get Brau at the QT in campustown before every FB game. We’d use the cases as pylons and play tackle FB while tailgating on what is now the practice field. score and the other team had to chug a beer. Lots of injuries, but a lack of sobriety helped with the in-game pain.

Not one that needs to come back but does anyone remember Cafe Lavish (I think that’s what it was called). It was just of off Welch on Lincoln Way. You could get $1 bean burritos and they’d sell you a pitcher of bud heavy right up to 2:00 AM. We’d hit them up after everywhere else had last call at 1:40.

They were open in the mid 2000s, but I think their owner got caught running some sort of international calling card scheme.

Cys roost sign also used to say 'Don's deli' (maybe still does). Is/was this an actual deli during the day?
I don’t know if it was a deli, but the burger baskets were great back in the day. We’d go there after class, in the summer, the whole class and throw darts and have lunch. Loved summer school in Ames!
