I think some fans are taking what SEMO was able to do against our defense as a “uh oh, our defense may not be very good this year” without realizing we didn’t really do anything fancy on defense vs SEMO.
We literally just had to go out there, hang out in our base D with a couple modifications here and there, not blitz much (if at all?) and we were going to win that game.
The SEMO game was a tune up for Iowa. We rarely ran in the first half, I don’t think we’ll run much vs iowa. We threw a lot of intermediate, crossing routes, which I think we’ll see a lot of vs iowa. IMO, the SEMO game was for us to break in a new QB/offense (mostly in the first half), make sure things are where we want them to be for iowa, and let our defense practice tackling, because we know what to expect from Iowa’s “offense.”
