That’s true they’ll always have the 1956 National Championship game to hang over our heads lol.
He was talking about how they played Baylor for the NIT Championship and their fans were claiming they would rather play for that than exit 2nd round in the tournament like we did with Fred that year lol.

I remember that game. Baylor shot like 85% from the field, most of which were dunks.

I'll repeat: making the NIT Final was listed as a bigger accomplishment for top sports stories by The Gazette that year.

Imagine thinking not making the tournament is better than winning a game in it.

Makes sense. Baylor’s rosters are usually full of freak athletes even in down years. Fran’s rosters… well, not so much.

I was at a friends house, we always gather to watch the NCAAs and that game was on somewhere in that week. Bunch of Hawk fans (including some grads so they aren't TOO delusional). Glorious dunk after dunk.

Oregon and Richmond also highlights for me at those tourney parties.

******* liar.

I went back 70 years. Iowa has had four 1st team AA, one 2nd team AA
(Chuck Darling-52, Jarrod Uthoff-16, Luka Garza-20, Luka Garza-21, Keegan Murrey-22)
Iowa State has had one 1st team AA, three 2nd team AA
(Gary Thompson-57, Marcus Fizer-00, Jamaal Tinsley-01, Georges Niang-16)

If you want to cherry pick, the 60 years between 1956 and 2016, Iowa State had four AA and Iowa had one.

If I counted correctly, just in last 40 years (82-22) All-Americans (1st & 2nd team): Duke-31, UNC-24, KU-23, KU-15, Oklahoma-9, Illinois-9

I forgot about Uthoff, what a joke that is.

If Uthoff was an AA, how was Monte, Kane, Clyburn, Shayok, etc. not?
Because Fran's system is Great Value Grinnell College. One player does all of the scoring while the rest of them look to get him the ball. Look at the last few years. Murray, Garza, Uthoff. And that's why they don't make it very far in the tournament, you take away that one player and they're toast.

I compared them to Peak UNI earlier, but "Great Value Grinnell College" is sublime.

Yep, say what you will about its long term effectiveness, but Fran's system is always good for producing one statistical phenomenon
