Is it their decision?
Yes. There is a maximum BEDS number (enrollment) to be eligible to play 8-man, but every school under that number has the option to play 11-man football in Class A instead. It's their choice.

But at what point can they decide? Isn't it every two years? (Used to be)
Also does each school know what they're numbers will be like for kids actually out?
They lost their starting qb in the 2nd game of the year and then the sophmore backup had surgery this week so they started a Frosh against SE Polk.Johnston really represented well at state, its almost like a team under .500 shouldn't be in the playoffs.
Against my alma materNevada (my alma mater) beats Adel 34-26 in a game that went back and forth. Our reward is getting to go to Harlan to get disemboweled.

I still can't figure out why they didn't send Winterset to Bondurant and Decorah to Waverly.
I get they might be rematches but it makes so much more sense from a seeding AND geography perspective.
Because the first two rounds in 3A-5A were pods.

I’m not commenting on whether a school should play 8 man or not, but I will say the number of kids on the team should not matter.Yeah it's every two years I believe. I don't know any details about any particular school but if there is a school that consistently is getting 30 guys to go out then they would be able to give more of them opportunities to play by moving to Class A.
One alum to another! *nods*Against my alma mater(Harlan)

If Team A has 50 boys in 10-12 and 50 on the football team they should be treated the same as Team B with 50 boys but 20 on the team
