That excuse was clearly always a lie and he confirmed it.
Fred doesn't like any non-basketball tasks period. He doesn't like recruiting, watching over kids over who occasionally make stupid decisions, and all the other things related to college coaches. That's why he likes the NBA, because he has his small domain of control and he's good with that.
The only possible exception to that rule could be at a place like UCLA where they have the motivation and resources to theoretically remove those responsibilities from the coach. They could have someone assigned as team babysitter, recruiting bagman, all that stuff that Fred doesn't want to do. Even then, I still suspect he is more comfortable in the NBA.
