This week’s F-5 idea comes to us courtesy of Cyke.

A timely topic, following official release of ISU men's basketball non-league schedule for 2017-18.

Rank 5 schools you wish ISU could/would schedule for a home-and-home series (or "home/road," if you prefer that term).

Lists can be pie-in-the-sky (chock-full of powerhouses) or a more realistic-yet-compelling set of opponents.

Additional option: Make a separate list for each.

My 5 is in-progress, will post in a while.

Go!

Dream list:
Duke
Kentucky
Louisville
UNC
Oregon

Realistic list:
Northwestern (so I could easily attend)
Michigan State
Butler
Wichita State
Notre Dame

My 5
Largely realistic, starting regionally, then outward.
1. Minnesota/Illinois (could be 2-year with one, 2-year with the other … potential long-term rivalry)
2. Wichita State
3. Marquette
4. Oregon/Gonzaga
5. UConn/Xavier (or similar AAC/Big East combos)

Several other possibilities within this framework, it’s a starting point.

Creighton/Nebraska rotating wouldn't bother me, either, maybe not frequently.

There are options with A-10 and MWC, too — and mid-range P5 teams.

I could do a pie-in-sky list, but possibility of that in short-term is occasional one-off neutral game.

If one of the criteria is that the team has to come to HILTON and not Well's Fargo like Ohio State demanded, I'd go as follows...

1. Michigan State
2. Duke
3. Arizona
4. Gonzaga
5. UConn

That's a team from each of the other major conferences (except Gonzaga). I didn't include the SEC because we have the B12/SEC challenge. If we are good enough, Kentucky will come to Hilton eventually anyway.

The key would be to bring these teams to Hilton. Can't be any Well's Fargo, or Chicago (like Duke a few years ago).

Ohio State did not demand to play at Wells Fargo. BVD wanted a game in Wells Fargo against a high level opponent.

First choices would be the blue bloods: Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, North Carolina, then someone like Indiana/Gonzaga/Louisville/Michigan

Realistically, I'd target Power 5 teams in good recruiting areas

Minnesota
Memphis
Illinois/Northwestern
Cincy/Ohio State
Georgia/GA Tech

On Wisconsin
1.) Wisconsin
2.) College of Wooster (it'd be an exhibition game since it's d-3, but I still think it would be cool since it's my alma mater)
3.) Marquette
4.) Minnesota
5.) Illinois

1. UNI. I never got to see the Cyclones at McLeod.
2. Milwaukee. Keep a high profile for recruiting.
3. Creighton. Let Greg lose again at Hilton.
4. Colorado State. Bring Larry back to a standing ovation.
5. Oregon. We can thank Dana in person for opening up the Creighton job.

I've always felt as far as conference preparation was concerned a potential road loss to a Quality DI team was better than a 25 point win over a Directional Guarantee. (Yes I understand Directionals agree to travel in exchange for paycheck thus department revenue earnings). I personally feel that Iowa State is now at a point in its current program where RPI standing is more important than W/L record.

I enjoy the regional stuff, not dying to see us get smacked by a Duke or UNC every other year

I also took the regional opponents in areas that we recruit approach:

1. Creighton
2. Minnesota
3. Michigan St. (probably less likely)
4. Wisconsin
5. Marquette
