The Shell Rock and Waverly footage was most interesting to me. The Shell Rock footage was the most sobering, it really showed the scope of how mean water can be, IMO.

Also, I walked that wooden bridge at the end of the Waverly footage many times while I was at the Burg. It's hard to imagine the water being as high as it was in those shots.

It looks like the "inflatable" dam Waverly installed is working. There will be damage below the dam in SE Waverly, but it looks like the release of water at the dam is helping the areas above the dam. The water just being a few feet into Kohlmann Park is amazing.

Shell Rock is a mess. Much worse than anything they have seen before. Clarksville and Greene even worse.

It's a sad sight to see but we will get it cleaned up and move on.

Looks like it's now up to 16 feet. Going to be much higher in the morning. Can't believe it's not cresting till Tuesday morning.

18.55 feet now. Any reports of flood waters going over banks?

Yes but in the expected areas. They are not attempting to keep it out all through the city just downtown and in dense residential and commercial areas (mainly in the middle of the city). So above and below that it is going out.

I was surprised, but with the extraordinary outpouring of support, plus the 4 days to prep, they've protected what appears to be to be all the populated areas of the city.

They hauled literally tens of thousands of loads of sand and dirt to make huge levies around the New Bo and Czech Village neighborhoods, along with (I heard) over 7 miles of deployed Hesco fences.

Within the next hour the river will pass 20 ft and be the second highest level ever - and so far so good. The defenses have held this far.

The warning time and experience from 08 has really pulled everyone together to make sure everything gets done. I listened to the presser yesterday and the city manager had a good quote. Basically something along the lines of "You don't wash the rental car before you return it but you wash your own car. Everyone has taken ownership of their city and stepped up."

wait a second. if 2008 crested at 32 feet and this will crest at 23 feet what's the big deal?

It is still a major flood (second highest on record). So far so good but we have several more feet to go. They are over prepared for what it is projected to be but after 2008 that is expected.

Initial projections had levels going up to 26' (and some estimates as high as 28' could be found). I'd rather be over prepared than under.
Plus, the amount of money and time that's been put into the Newbo and Czech areas is tremendous, not to mention downtown. Protecting those is vital to growth and development of the city.

One is 3 feet of muddy water in the living room and kitchen, whereas the other is 3 feet of muddy water in the upstairs bedrooms. If the home remains standing it is much grief, hard work, and financial loss either way. Prayers and thoughts to the people of eastern Iowa. I wouldn't even wish this on Hawkeye fans.

Judging off of the CalCam drone video the biggest impact from this will be the setting up and tearing down of all the protection. Might be a good time to revise those inundation maps.

it seems like the news overhypes weather events. not saying this isn't important or noteworthy - but i recall hurricane predictions and snow predictions and all sorts of related events that ended up being far less sinister than predicted.
