I wonder if Candle was making a run at Manning to go back to Toledo to be the OC there and CMC needed to make this happen to keep him on staff.

Yes , does this mean we have an opening for either Barney Cotton or Marty Fine to return

This one concerns me. Makes me feel that CMC had others turn it down and he did not have any other options at this point. I would think the CMC would now be very involved on the offensive side of the ball now, but not sure if that would be a good move either.

I really like the effort and such put in by the Cambell staff but I just don't think they know what they are getting into. Very few coaches come in and have success immediately. The Big XII, I'm afraid, is going to eat them up next year. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
I'm not saying that the new staff will definitely be successful out of the gate, but CPR & Co were being eaten up by the Big XII almost all of their 7 years here. It's hard for me to think that the new coaching staff will fail any worse than CPR.

I think Manning is a good coach from what Ive read.

But I also thought Sturdy did some good things in the short amount of time he was the OC.

One thing to consider here...it would not surprise me if Candle at Toledo was looking to offer Manning the OC job at Toledo? Manning is said to be a top recruiter and stud Oline coach and rising star in the profession..I'm just thinking outside the box here but kinda wonder of Candle was looking to steal him.

Ok, lets save some money in the football program. Let's hire everyone from Toledo so we can save on printing new playbooks. Just get some I-State stickers to cover up the Toledo logos on them.

Its not like a coach comes into the profession and is tagged with MAC level/Big 12 level. It is the ability to coach what is available and if you can do that, facilities like ours vs Toledo only increase chances to land high rated recruits. I like the CMC hire and I trust he knows what he is doing. Time will tell.

If there are struggles, Campbell won't have any excuses as far as assistant coaches, that's for sure.

It's pretty easy for me to envision this. Starts out with three or four seasons without any bowl games and gets fired. That would be worse than CPR.

I'm not predicting this, but the fact that CPR made it to year seven means he did something right at some point. I think Campbell will be successful here, but it's also likely he won't have as good of a tenure when all is said and done.

Try and compare resume's between Sturdy and Tom Manning. He may be a brilliant young guy but it still takes experiences at this level to have seen everything that will be thrown your way. People have vastly underestimated the difficulty of our schedule when teams like Baylor, TCU, and Kansas State, (should I add EIU?) have HOF type coaches.

I think he was referring to before he was the HC.

So any chance for Co-OCs with Manning and Sturdy?

Doubt it, unless if Manning really doesn't want to call plays or Sturdy needs the title to stay. I'd think it would be more likely that Manning is the OC but Campbell does the play calling.

Messingham had prior HC AND OC Experience and look where that got us
That doesn't mean the opposite will occur. My concerns about Campbell are growing a little. There is excitement, but there are a few red flags.
