Not far, but if I don't get Casey's Taco Pizza at least once when I'm back, it's basically a wasted trip.

Even their breakfast croissants w/ sausage/egg are much better than any other gas station's that I've found.

Been gone nearly 25 years (Spokane over 20 years) and here's what I miss:

Thunderstorms.
Cicadias.
Fall colors.
ISU football in person.
Milly's tenderloins.
Mustards BBQ.
Tavern Pizza - the original.
Corso's pizza.
El Compadres.
Tasty Tacos.
Accurate weather forecasts.
Kitten noses and puppy dog kisses.

What else do the out-of-towners miss?

You miss cicadas?

Chicago, IL
Everything ISU.
Taco Johns. (The closest one to me is about 2 hours away in Bourbonnais)
Casey's Pizza. (Closest one is about 1.5 hours away)
Casey's Tenderloins.
Hy-vee Chinese buffet. (It might have been better on Sunday's hungover, not sure what it's like now)
Cheap gas prices. (Central Iowa is usually .75-$1/gallon cheaper than Chicago)
Tasty Tacos.
Being around ISU fans. I see one in Chicago and almost have a panic attack.

Been gone from Iowa for 29 years (Illinois then AZ) and I certainly miss ISU athletic events in person but mostly I miss the goodsense of Iowans in day to day conversations. Most Arizona people have been led to believe that the only reason they are not living in Mansions and have their own planes is because Jose & Pepe sneaked across the border 5 years ago to work in a car wash for $8/hour in 110 degree temps.

and here we go...

Ha, didn't compare the two...it's more based on tradition than anything. In fact, even with Casey's in nearly every town, I can say it's never quite the same if it's not from the same place I always got it from.

I remember Happy Joe's having some good stuff though...but who wants to hang out at the Lindale Mall? :)

HyVee Chinese is great in Ames, but not so much anywhere else.

Des Moines
10 years ago had I been old enough to leave Iowa I probably would have. Now that I've been out of college for a few years there is a lot more to do. Des Moines has really grown and I'd rather not pay 2x or 3x as much for a house somewhere else.

Maybe I'm thinking locusts? What are the critters that make that noise in the evenings?

Oh - and lightening bugs. I miss those.

No, you're right - cicadas. In my neighborhood they are like 115 db at night, so I wouldn't ever miss them. Ha!
