He's a good recruiter, he's already here, the players like him and he would keep continuity in the program.

Sounds a lot like Wayne Morgan version II.

Not even close to the same thing.

For every example of a promoted assistant or mid-major coach that has been hired and failed, there is one that has succeeded. Comparison is silly. Anything of that description is going to come with some inherent risk, though I would say that TJ is a known commodity to those making a decision. I have my favorites, but I will get behind whoever is hired the moment it's announced.

Has anybody considered going back to Hoiberg is trying to convince him to pull a Donavan/Patino/Altman?

Prohm, to me, has the most potential. Is he the right guy for Iowa State? Who knows. But he played a key role in getting Sip Cannon (currently with the Houston Rockets) as the lead assistant and got a commitment from Cam Payne over Wichita St. Payne will likely be a top 20 pick in the upcoming draft. If he can bring that type of talent to Murray, Kentucky or wherever Murray St is then I like his chances at recruiting well to Ames.

His teams play with tempo and love to shoot the 3. I like his demeanor and seems like a players coach from what I see on YouTube. Everyone has a preference and that is what can generate good discussion. To each his own.

I need someone to help me out here. What is the fascination with TJ? The only thing he has done is prove he can recruit some decent talent. No one is confusing with a top 20 recruiter in the country or he would have been poached by a more historical program. If he leaves after a year, so what? Proehm is great recruiter and Underwood has proven he could get it done at both KSU and SFA.

Why do posters on this site continue to prop up TJ?

He has never been a head coach, which is a much bigger challenge.

I don't get it either. As someone else mentioned, the only schools he got attention from for the HC position were Wisconsin-Green Bay and Northern Kentucky. The guy is a good recruiter, but he hasn't proven himself as a HC. ISU right now is not like ISU when it hired Hoiberg. It is on the upward trajectory and needs to keep on that. TJ is a huge risk at this point, moreso than any other coach on the list since he has never been a HC.

We should be thanking Leath so much for having a shred of business sense to keep JP in check and conduct this like a real job interview and not some favoritism ********.

Am I the only one who just sifts through these threads to find CW and Jeremy posts? If either of them change their avatars before this thing is over I'll be ******...

I am not bashing you at all because you are just using the resources you have in front of you, but this is a perfect example of why we need to get behind and support whoever it is that the AD hires. We really don't know anything about these guys, in comparison to those making the decisions.

Don't get the love for Prohm. Never has coached at the P5 level. I'm not for Underwood but at least he has. Prohm is a huge risk - we have no way of knowing if his system can translate to the P5 level, can he recruit P5 talent against other P5 teams, can he manage boosters and outside commitments?

If Prohm, I would rather have TJ. Both are unknowns bug at least he is familiar with ISU, the players, and the system.
Big deal!. Where do you think Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy came from. Look around dude! Do you think that only successful coaches had previous power 5 experience? Prohm is arguably the best up and coming coach in America. I guarantee you that he would be on the short list of any top program in America if they were searching for coaches. I'd rather him come here than have him go to a place like Oklahoma State where he could hurt us every year.

We should all be very thankful that Leath is involved. It's pretty clear that Leath saw that outside of being given Fred in his lap...Every other hire by JP has been nothing short of a disaster.

We get it... Pollard killed your kittens. So.... Please list all hires by Pollard with either disaster/not disaster next to their name.

After the first day, I'm now in the none-of-the-above camp. Perhaps this is another stage of Holberg watch, but I can't get excited about any of these candidates. Enjoy dissecting the pros and cons of these nobodys and wake me when it's over.

A lot of people saying that we need to continue with Fred's style of coaching. I agree. It was effective and the players we have are built for that system.

One problem I have with Prohm is that his teams have had a very low assist ratio. That is indicative of a lack of passing and crisp ball movement. Another issue I have is that Prohm's teams have really struggled on the Defensive Glass. In the physical Big 12 that is a real issue. I really think that Prohm would have a lot of struggles with the style of play in the Big 12 and adjusting to it. It is not Ohio Valley Conference basketball.

IMO, Underwood would be a better choice than Prohm. The guy knows the Big 12. He knows the landscape. I would take him over Prohm and and Drew.

I also think Otzelberger would do well. He is only 37 years old. But has a lot of exposure to high Major Basketball and knows what is involved. He is used to the crowds of 14,000 plus and coaching in front of them. And the physicality of the Big 12.

Altman, Otz, Underwood. All would be good. Altman a homerun hire. The other 2 are really underwhelming IMO.

:) I'm going to make sure to change it between every post.

IMO I'd like to think we could pull a coach from another P5 school that's had some success. We have lots of positives to our program. Current top 10 roster, ridiculously supportive fan base, Hilton magic makes Hilton a top 10 arena for atmosphere, basketball school, etc. We're a better job than the majority of P5 positions out there right now. I mean just in the Big 12, the only better jobs are Texas and Kansas, and I think you could argue we have some selling points that Texas couldn't touch, but they have the bank account. Which is what this will all be about. We're a great place for a lot of coaches, but are we willing to put down the cash, that's the question, and unfortunately, it doesn't seem like we are.

For those in the "but he can recruit" camp, I'm pretty sure Prohm has recruited as many NBA draft picks as TJ, and has experience as a head coach of a top 25 team. Why is TJ more qualified again?

The Otz lovers think that since Otz was the assistant under Hoiberg 3 seasons ago, that he will be able to coach vicariously through Hoiberg. So they think it will be almost like Hoiberg never left. And we'll just be playing Hoiball all over everyone. It's a complete fantasy land, and reality will make them look like fools.

I have to admit, I'm warming to the idea of Prohm. Only if we can keep TJ on board though.

If we start agreeing I'm going to look for the asteroid soon. While I agree on keeping TJ..prohm top asst is the guy who recruited the two NBA players at Murray st. Maybe that's a good thing. Not like u can't have more than one great recruiter on staff.
