What do you think it takes to make a winner at Iowa State? What changes need to be made with this program? (Other than just "Keep Rhoads" or "Fire Rhoads")

Increase presence in Texas for recruiting
Schedule differently
Offensive scheme... less plays vs up tempo

K-State and Oklahoma State have built winners in two completely different ways. Baylor has as well, but their recruiting advantages are far above KSU and OSU. One is a slow-it-down and physical approach, while another is a spread offense meant to create mismatches. Both recruit Texas hard.

Whatever is going on now isn't working, although it had seen success in previous years. Curious what everyone thinks needs to be the approach moving forward, whoever is coach.

Schedule easier in the noncon. Even if we have games we should win already (FCS, Mac), the greater that margin the less worn down we are when we get to real competition. Give me the type of team that'd get blown out by a MAC team.

Hope the bottom half of the big 12 gets worse (the problem isn't that we have elite teams in the big 12, the problem is there isn't as much dropoff)

Coaches with deep ties to Texas or Florida. A good coach at preaching the basics.

It's actually quite simple.

It shouldn't be that complicated. Look at what we have to offer compared to all of the schools we compete against. Despite what the folks with the shovels want to tell you, it takes more than a "winning" attitude. And as for not asking for much, just a 6 win football team, the entirety of the history of Iowa State football, shows how hard that is to achieve.

Since we're never going to ever really bridge the disparity between what we have and the rest of p5 schools have, we're going to have to think outside the box. What that means, I'm not sure. But we need to identify and develop something that makes us unique.

I don't think that will work. The kids we recruit from Texas/Florida are the same kids that get beat up by the guys that go to UT and Oklahoma.

I think you get a coach with a clear vision and identity for the team. You get big guys from the Midwest/North & establish a great strength program to build a foundation for the line. You sprinkle in some athleticism for the skill positions where you can find it (I'm partial to looking at recruiting some New Zealand / Australian FB players if that's legal). I think the best offensive scheme would be power because I think that works best for the prototypical Midwest lineman.

There are plenty of players left over after the big boys get their fill. If you get a coach that can coach them up and develop them as well as put them in a good S&C program then you can make something out of the leftovers.

It doesn't matter what scheme you run as long as you run it well.

We need complete Big xII lines on both sides of the ball, not a player here and there. Were constantly blown up at the point of attack. Until our lines compete were toast. I suggest we go two or three to one (Juco to High School) at this point. Can't get much worse if they don't pan out, can it?
