Who said that? Just because two guards were the first to climb on board, doesn't make them the "top priority". That's what my old Econ prof would have called a "causality fallacy".
I think it's pretty easy to see they became top priorities. We offered Thomas in either Dec '10 or Jan of '11 - the 1st high major to do-so. Hoiberg took on the recruitment personally - something head coaches don't often do. If you ask Mark Miller of WBBYearbook, I think he would tell you that no other coach was as involved or spent as much time with Thomas than Hoiberg (if another was, it was Bennett).
We offered Morris last June (ish), and again we were one of a small handful of D1's to offer that early. At that time, he was one of 3-5 PGs that we recruited hard. Last winter, by appearances, Terrence Samuel and Monte Morris got most of the staff's attention. That shifted once again this spring, when it was CLEAR that Morris was priority, as our interest in Samuel decreased.
Now, Hoiberg didn't tell me this himself, but I think if you follow recruiting closely, and all of the info that SvrWxCy digs up, it's very hard to come to any other conclusion.
..but if for some reason, you'd like to think these two weren't priorities, you're free to do so. I won't argue it anymore.
I wonder Matt Thomas could be the next Jon Diebler from Ohio State in terms of shooting, I swear that Diebler could not miss from 3 while playing for the Buckeyes...
I disagree. Obviously we went hard after Lockett and that kid that ended up at Florida. I think that for any spring openings we have Hoiberg will look towards transfers. I think it is a pretty genius strategy actually since spring high school signees are really high risk.
You make great points. What I was saying is that there is a difference between those two specific players being a priority (especially Thomas), and the guard position being the first priority for this class. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
By "and" I think that he meant both, and just couldn't remember DFS's na--er, initials. :wink:
Why cant we drop '13 bigs for a moment. We have 2 soon to be 3 source top 100 commits. They also continue to sky rocket in rank. The bigs will come, so why worry? Let's enjoying bragging about our 2 guys!

I don't think it's completely over. I think every now and then we will snag a transfer. I mean this year we targeted 3 transfers in Lockett, Finney-Smith, and Uthoff. Unfortunately missed on all 3. I could definitely see us trying to land a transfer after the 2012-2013 season though since we have such a huge class to fill. We will especially try to sign one if it's a scenario where they can play right away in the 2013-2014 season. I would say after the 2013-2014 season though the transfer route will be over with besides a random transfer every few years.
Too bad Morgan didn't pull the trigger with us. Not going to lose sleep over him as we seem to be sitting pretty good with Martez Walker and they are similar players, but he could have complimented MT and MM very well.
Add in two post players along with those 3 and you have a full line up in this class.
