I saw the question asked and I will give the best answer I can.

After Chris died Johnny Orr Decided that someone from the state of Iowa on the Iowa State team would wear the number 40 from hear on out. I know Fred wore it one year and we have had someone wear it since then.
I think last year we finally did it long enough and the tradition was ended. Personally they should have put a how long type number on the number of years someone would wear it. I think they just decided that Iowa State had honored Chris enough.

I'd like to see ISU do the same thing with #3 to honor former Cyclone Brian Pearson.

Also...Iowa State only has one active Iowa-native on the roster in Bubu. He would have been a 1 year old at the time of Street's accident. It was a great tradition, but I think the time had come.

Good lord I feel old.

It was above and beyond that ISU even elected to do this and I agree it's probably gone on long enough. (This coming from an Indianola grad also.)

i always thought it was given to an Iowa born player. I say keep it going, being from Indianola its still a sore subject when brought up. Why did Harrison Barnes pick number 40 (not a statement just wondering if anyone knew)

Yeah that would have been nice to honor Brian Pearson. I am not really sure we did anything to honor him. He was a great guy.

We also had a kid that came here a few years ago, then transfered to somewhere in Nebraska. He ended up getting killed in a car wreck. Can't remember the kids name. I think it was Brandon something.

It just seems that a tradition isn't something that goes away after a few years. I'm sure there are a ton of traditions at schools all around the country that the athletes have no knowledge of the origin.

HB looked up to Austen Arnaud when they played to together on the Ames High basketball (Austen was a senior, Barnes was a freshman). Austen wore #4, so he chose #40.

I never knew this, cool tradition.

The real question is has Acie Earl stopped shaving a 40 into his hair? jk

I remember when this happened. Sad. I was in middle school. I remember the T-shirts that came out for the Chris Street foundation. They were white w/ black lettering and had some great quote on them. Anyone remember?

Also, has Jess Settles graduated yet?

Are you sure that's it? Arnaud's a RS Senior this year and Harrison's a Freshman. That would make Harrison an 8th grader when Arnaud was a senior.

If I remember right they did do something for Pearson too I don't know if it was something with the #3 jersey or not, but the do have a Brian Pearson award at the end of the year awards banquet.

Way up there
I've read articles where HB said he wore 40 because AA wore that number in basketball during his time at Ames high.

On the original topic, I agree it was a great gesture especially when many of the kids on the ISU squad at the time of Streets death had known/played against Chris. I would have no problem if we had kept the tradition going but don't think need to resume it either.

I don't know that ISU made a decision to discontinue; I think it was lack of Iowa players dressing. I also seem to remember that CFH said something in an interview that he wanted to restart it (but that brings up why isn't Bubu wearing it this year?)

Makes me feel old too:sad:

The Chris Street foundation has done a lot, not only to memorialize him, but to help kids growing up in Indianola (and what a better way to honor him?). The middle school has a gym named after him, and there's a large city park named after him as well.
