When you personalize this, to the point where you defend the coach more than the program, it tends to make all of the good points you may make (I don't know if there are any, I have not read any of your stuff) lose credibility.

So many on here are all about Greg, not the program. We are Cyclones, not McDermotts.

I also don't agree with all of the people taking shots at the guy yet either. There are valid criticisms of the way that he has run this program, but all of us want him to win. Let's see how it plays out, but when he makes mistakes it's fine to comment on them. Just like when he makes good decisions it is great to comment on those as well.

This is a fantastic post!

As I have said many times before, I am a Cyclone fan...not a fan of any particular coach. Why am I fond of Johnny Orr...because he brought consistent winning BB to ISU. Why do I have mixed emotions about LE...because he had us on the cusp of a Final Four and then a few years later disgraced the university with his off the court activities. Why am I not happy with Greg McDermott...because ISU BB has regressed to a point lower than it has been in since before the arrival of JO under his watch. I AM A CYCLONE FIRST, LAST, AND ALWAYS.

However, as the post above indicates, we have some posters (some known and some unknown) on this site that are "friends and family" of our current coach and their loyalty is to him first and ISU somewhere further down the line.

I would agree with the post you are referencing, and to your thoughts (for the most part) as well. However, you cannot discount the fact that I, and many others, despite not being relatives or friends of Coach McDermott, truly believe that he is the right man to take Iowa State to the next level, even if we are not completely satisfied with all of his accomplishments to date.
 
I have never met Greg other than having him take a pictue with my 2 sons. I still have doubts if he can get it done, yet I will pull for him because he is a class act. He runs a very clean ship which is refreshing after some of the guys we had before him. Do we need to start winning? Yes, but until it is obvious that he can't get it done I will still pull for him. To make it sound like he is completely responsible for us regressing to the pre-Orr days is interesting if not laughable. I thought Wayne telling everyone to leave when he got the axe might have a little something to do with that as well. With only 3 returning scholarship players we were in about as bad shape as possible. Hopefully this team can continue to make some of the negativity go away.

BTW. I don't remember Greg making as bad of a decision as having a player foul with 14 seconds on the game clock with 7 on the shot clock. That was one of the more boneheaded plays I have ever seen.
 
Although this may not be considered "that" win in GMAC's tenure....if I am not mistaken, no one on this team has ever won a conference road game...correct? Which makes it "that" game for the players. Now they can go to down to Texas Tech with something other than the "deer in the headlights" look.

This is very incorrect. Fact is Mac is a Cyclone at the current time. I'm supporting him as a coach of our program as much as I support the program.

The problem is a vocal minority has had a problem with him from day 1 and won't give him a chance or support him to get the program back to respectability.

But he peeved several people off by bringing it up by ragging on the program in the post game thread after a W.

I'm calling you out. I want to see a link or some sort of definitive proof that this actually happened. Until I see it, I'm calling BS.

My biggest pet peeve with this board and other sports-related boards is the way posters try and pass off mere opinions as FACTS and DEMAND that the rest of us take their word as freakin' gospel.

It's a stupid and arrogant thing to do, and I lose all respect for you when you do it. :realmad:
 
Good win Guys!!! Hope this springboards this team for the remainder of the season!! Sad to see Boozer hurt. Play like a team win like a team and most important stay tough!!
 
A win is a win. It is scary that it wasn't by 20. This game and the Texas game were good overall, but there were short runs where ISU just seemed to stop playing for a couple of minutes... If we could correct that problem, it is exciting how well this season could end up. Also, its a good thing that NU is an even worse free throw shooting team than we are.

This is another example. You state that you feel that he is the right guy to lead the program.

What have you seen that makes you think this? What tangible reasons can you state that this is the guy that will get it done?

I always hear that he is a nice guy, runs a clean program.....Those are admirable traits. However, it's still all about the W's. And being a nice guy, and running a clean program doesn't mean that you can't win.

W's raise money, W's get TV exposure, W's get the attention of the types of players that we need to compete in the conference that we play in.

I don't think that he can't get it done, I am just curious as to why there are some on here that seem convinced that he will.

Let's hope that this team is learning how to win. And that this all comes to pass. We are all CYCLONE fans.

That wasn't what he said, he said this team lacks identity. And he is right on that fact. I hope that we discover this soon. But reactionary coaching doesn't build a foundation to develop that mentality.

It was a good win, one we would have lost a couple weeks ago. That is something to build on, and develop an identity. It was also a low scoring game that allowed Greg to manage each possession. It was much more in his comfort zone than running up and down the floor.

As for the person you referenced, I don't know, or care, if he hates Greg McDermott (I am sure that Greg McDermott doesn't care either). But I will wager that if Greg starts winning consistently, he will shut up.

There have been lots of things to question in the running of this program. Hopefully that is starting to work itself out. Maybe he has bottomed this thing out so that we can start moving forward.

As a CYCLONE fan, I hope so.
 
We should have won by more, but it's still a win.

The encouraging thing was that we won a game we ABSOLUTELY HAD TO WIN. If we're going to get to 9-7, winning games like this is absolutely necessary.
 
Last night was the crappiest free throw shooting I've EVER seen at a basketball game. It wasn't loud, or anything of the sort, and neither team could buy a free throw.

Of Mcdermott's 15 conference wins, five have been against the Huskers.
Beating the doormat of the Big 12 has never been the issue.

The reason they made that foul was they were in a bind....they were behind, so they couldn't let us run out the shot clock, because the game clock would be to close to zero for comfort (at least for their chances). In addition to this, they only had 5 team fouls, and so they needed to foul right away to make sure they could get us into the bonus so we had to shoot free throws and they could get the possession back. Thats my take on it. Tough choice, but probably the right move.
