Cyclones.tv coverage

For many years now after I left Iowa I've been grateful for what I could get for wrestling coverage. When Cyclones.tv came along I was thrilled being able to watch the Clones home meets over the internet.

Wrestling coverage has come a long way and this year anyone with a Flo subscription can watch our Cyclones.tv feed. Similarly, I can watch many other teams home feeds.

Which leads me to my point, that we absolutely have to replace Tom Kroschel. This is no longer IPTV where we are trying to explain the sport to anyone watching. It is embarrassing listening to Tom ramble on about 1970's history while Kyven is trying to explain the action on the screen.

I know Tom is a great historian and a loyal Cyclone through and through, but he does not belong on the broadcast. Watching the UNI-Neb rebroadcast tonight and Drew Foster and whoever he is with are fantastic. As these broadcasts are more public to the wrestling community on Flo this could very easily affect recruiting.

ISU vs Iowa Grades

Mackall -- C. He put the effort in, but he is just far over-matched. Lee is the best 1st period wrestler in the history of NCAA wrestling. You saw that today.

Small -- C. Again, effort was fine, just not close to DeSanto. He stayed in it after being down 6.

Parker -- A-. I just like his effort. He isn't the most talented in the world, but he gassed Happel, and that's how he won that match. Battling every position.

Degen -- B. Him and Lugo are back and forth every time. Degen made a mistake, and it cost him. If not for the locked hands, its 6-2 and he rides it out to win. I thought it was 2 at the end, but they didn't get the call.

Carr -- A+. First test of his career and he passed. Young is tough. Solid and wrestles hard in every position. Carr had to go get it, and he did.

Straw -- B+. I thought Marinelli was going to run right through him. Straw came out, got the opening takedown, and kept it to a decision. Marinelli looked a bit off compared to last year, but I see that as early season stuff.

Coleman -- C. Kemerer is much better, and it showed. Coleman gave up some positions in the third period and kept trying straight on shots. Needs to find something else to move up levels.

Colbray -- D. Come on man. Brands is tough, I will give him that. But you have to try to score. Took what, 2 shots? Rides him tough in the 3rd for a minute then lets him go in the TB, then didn't come close to scoring.

Shapiro -- C. See 125/133 except Warner isn't as dynamic or as much of a scorer as his Hawk teammates. Was expecting more of a fight from Shapiro. Needs to keep working and developing.

Gremmel -- C. He kept it close, and that was about it. I think he was out there to not get pinned. Took the one great shot at the end and didn't try to score. Tried to hold on and Cass scored instead.

Overall team -- C. This team has a long ways to go. Did about as I expected, except for 184. 149 is a toss up each and every time. Many guys got C's simply because they were out-gunned, and did about as I expected. Gomez possibly missing for the year will drop team expectations down just a bit. This team will rely on 125, 141, 149, 157 and 184 to do their work. Carr is a title threat. That is for sure.

Coach Campbell's favorite ISU Football team vs MY Favorite Campbell Coached ISU Football team(s).

I've often heard that this year's team is Coach Campbell's favorite team of the Iowa State teams he has coached. I have wondered what he really means by this?
Because for me:
- this team isn't as fun as the 2017 squad where Kyle Kempt emerged from nowhere into a leadership role as the rest of the team resolved to play as a unit.
- this team isn't as solid on offense or defense as the post Noland 2018 squad.
- this team hasn't shown signs of incredible growth during the season like the 2016, 2017, and 2018 squads.

I'm sure I can go deep into my praise and criticisms for multiple parts of this team, but the point is that I don't feel like this team plays with a sense of urgency with respect to the talent level they have on the field. They seem to muddle to the level of their opponent and never show consistency. So for me, someone who wasn't expecting a 7 or 8 win season, the season has still been a disappointment to me. I hope in the Kansas State game they are able to figure out how to play with that near elite capability they sometimes show. I also hope they find a way to deliver the knockout punch that has been missing (and has allowed many lesser teams to get back into the football game).

Damn I miss Butler and Montgomery...

Matt Campbell and Senior Day

Got to our seats early for Senior Day, and watching Coach Campbell struggle through the hugs and tears hit me hard. He grabbed each player and spoke right into their ears...you could tell by the players reactions that it was very real and heartfelt. He is such a genuine human being, that truly cares for these young men. So happy this class act staff represent my university!

On a side note, I have also noticed all year when the "kid captain" comes off the field after the coin toss, CMC is there to meet them and he takes time to chat with them. Yesterday, he squatted down to the level of the little guy and shook his hand and talked with him. Again...classy.
