What is the bare minimum expectation for next season?

I would like to get this established now. Where Steve Prohm is concerned, we have a tendency to "define mediocrity downwards". By that I mean, if 8 years ago I would have told the Cyclone fan base that we would have a coach who would have a 13-win season and a 10-win season and still be retained, they would have been absolutely shocked. Yet now that it has actually happened, many are actually in favor of the retention.

I would like to know what the floor is for next season. If we wait until next season to define it, I think it will get lowered and lowered and lowered to the point where there is virtually no floor at all, for the sake of retaining him no matter what.

Twister Sister Summary - Big scare...big win

I realize it's been a couple of days since the game, but I've been way too busy and just now getting a chance to put down my thoughts. Last week was a critical week for the sisters as they had a home/home opportunity to get back in the upper echelon of the Big 12. They took care of business on Wednesday and Saturday was a chance to move into 4th all by themselves.

For all intents and purposes the first half was a solid performance for the sisters. The team came out playing salty defense and the offense...well...we were seeing motion, passing and it was fun to watch! The ladies would slowly pull ahead in a very workmanlike manner. Rebounding solidly and turning opportunities into points. The two things that were rather weird was our inability to hit the three. The team went a woeful 1-10 in the 1st and improved to 4-10 in the second. A little slow going, but even those misses didn't keep them from getting the job done. Scoring 38 points in a half is just pretty solid play.

As seems to be the case year after year, the ladies had one quarter that was a bust. The third saw them go into neutral on offense and the defense got a bit sketchy at times (but overall was still pretty good). The team hit a grand total of TWO shots in the third as we saw OU get back into the game. OU's offense wasn't exactly a thing of beauty either. It was just a lackluster quarter that saw the Sooners come within 5 points. The scariest part of the second half was seeing Joens go down hard. When she left the court we could see the tears in her eyes and I was feeling like the season just came to an end (and crazily we saw the key player for the men go down later that evening). The place was deathly quiet when she left and when she came back no the court the Hilton crowd (which was a very good crowd) exploded. This kid is one tough cookie. In the end, the fourth quarter was nip and tuck with Sheri's Sooners even taking the lead temporarily. But wouldn't you know it, it was Joens calmly standing at the free throw line with a two point lead and the game hanging in the balance. Two made shots later (the free throw woes are over as the team shot 100%!) and the game was iced.

While the game wasn't pretty all the way through, two things jumped out at me. The offense has shown it can be a motion offense and when that is happening they can be very effective. When the team stays out on the perimeter (As we saw in the second half) it's much easier to defend our players. OU did a good job of neutralizing our perimeter offense and that allowed them to be in the game.

Observations

Free Throws - as I mentioned it was good to see us shoot well from the line. The team went 14-18 (corrected) with no one struggling.

Maggie - after the record setting game against OSU, Maggie dropped her turnover number to 5. Still way too many, but this is a new position she is learning. Not an exceptional game statistically, but she is still helping this team succeed in numerous ways such as her defense.

Wise - got a couple of minutes and still a shell of herself offensively.

Scott - started slow with her inside outside game but heated up fast. She is playing some of her best ball right now. What got me this time was seeing some of her aggressive play on defense. She blocked some key shots without drawing fouls late in the game that were huge. 18 points and 12 boards is nothing to sneeze at.

Joens - here we are again talking about the iron man of the team. A rather slow start on the day, but you know she will get hers. She did. After getting her shoulder popped back into place she came back and gritted her way to 17 and 15...another double-double for one of the best players in the conference.

Rae - Not a great shooting game, but she was aggressive on the court and (as it seems to always happen) took some hard charges on defense that shifted the game in our favor.

AD - she is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. Always hustles. Isn't flashy. But she gets the job done. She is the #3 player on this team and always kicks in a handful of rebounds and points that make a difference. She has become on of our best three point shooters and seems to hit them when we need it most.

What's next? Two road games this week and both are toss ups. Texas and TCU. I think we are on the upswing and wouldn't be surprised to see another sweep this week.

To put a bulk toilet paper purchase from sams club or cosco in a kitchen pantry with the bulk paper towel purchase? Wife thinks it would be strange, I disagree, came here for the poll decision.

Riding time

I have been to or watched 5 meets so far this year. The one thing I don't get is why we don't try to get riding time in a lot of matches. Yesterday there were at last 6 times the other wrestler was up and out in under 9 seconds and we didn't appear to even want to hold them down. These were tight matches and riding out a guy for 30-60 seconds would seem to be an optimal idea to tire the bottom guy out. Am I missing something here, are our guys just not good on top or is this something Dresser would be coaching them to do. I am a novice fan at most but it gets maddening to give up the point that quick.

Future Lineup discussions

So with all the recruiting talk. I thought it would be interesting to put current projections on paper

2019-2020
125 - Mackall - RJr
133 - Small - RJr
141 - Parker - RJr
149 - Degen - RJr
157 - Carr - RFr
165 - Straw - RSr
174 - Colbray - RJr
184 - Coleman - RSo
197 - Shapiro - RFr
285 - Gremmel - RJr

2020-2021 (I am leaving starters as starters and not guessing who might beat them out)
125 - Mackall - RSr
133 - Small - RSr
141 - Parker - RSr
149 - Degen - RSr

157 - Carr - RSo
165 -
174 - Colbray - RSr
184 - Coleman - RJr
197 - Shapiro - RSo
285 - Gremmel - RSr

Gomez will be a factor at 133/141
Carr could go 165. Leaves Schumacher, Mulder, G Stotts in for 157/165
Broderson will be a factor at 174-197

2021-2022
125 - Reeves - RSo
133 - Ramazan - RSo
141 - Gomez - RJr
149 - Leisure - RSr

184 - Coleman - RSr
197 - Shapiro - RJr/ Broderson - RSo
285 - Dugan - RJr

Cam Robinson & Ben Monroe will be a redshirt freshman - 157?
Again have G Stotts - RJr at 157?
Again at 174, have Mulder, Schmacher
Again at 184 & 197, have to sort out Broderson, Shapiro and Coleman

I am not guessing on who might step up or who might transfer in or committ

Glass-half-full look at our schedule

I guess I'm more of a realist than a lot of people on here, but after thinking about out results so far, I guess I'm not as alarmed as I was a few days ago. We lost most of our scorers from last year. We had 2 NBA-level talents leave rather unexpectedly (THT, Wigginton) and our recruiting class and transfers weren't as good as we'd like. Was it hard for Prohm to recruit top caliber guards in November of 2018 when the recruits were thinking they'd be sitting behind Wigginton, THT and Haliburton? Maybe.

What were the expectations for this year given the attrition we had. I felt all summer and fall that this would be a down year similar to Hoibergs year 1. Lot's of close losses and a few bad losses.

Consider that there are 3 tiers of Big 12 teams:
  • Tier 1 = Teams you're going to lose to home and away -- Baylor, Kansas, West Virginia.
  • Tier 2 = Teams you should beat at home, but likely lose to on the read because Big 12 road wins are hard to come by -- Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU.
  • Tier 3 = Teams you should beat home and away -- Kansas State, Oklahoma State.
Using this criteria, here's our schedule color coded with green for wins against tough teams that I didn't think we'd beat, red for unexpected/bad losses, black for results I expected if I'm being honest about this year's team.

Win Home Miss Valley St
Loss Away Oregon St.
Win Home N. Illinois
Win Home So. Miss
Loss Nuet Michigan
Win Nuet Alabama
Loss Nuet Seton Hall
Win Home UMKC
Win Home Seton Hall
Loss Home Iowa
Win Home Purdue FW
Loss Home Florida A&M
Loss Away TCU
Loss Home Kansas
Win Home Oklahoma
Loss Away Baylor
Loss Away Texas Tech
Win Home Oklahoma St.
Loss Away Auburn
Loss Home Baylor
Loss Away Texas
Loss Away W. Virginia
Win? Home Kansas St.
Loss? Away Oklahoma
Win? Home Texas
Loss? Away Kansas
Win? Home Texas Tech
Win? Home TCU
Win? Away Oklahoma St.
Loss? Home W. Virginia
Win? Away Kansas St.

Minus the catastrophe with Florida A&M, I feel like we're doing maybe a bit better than I expected due to a couple of early season good wins. Hopefully we finish 6-3 and finish in the middle of the Big 12 as I expected.

Cyclones AND the NFL 2020: Off-season, draft, contracts, season review

I thought we could use a thread to post info on guys who have been in the NFL and MIGHT get to the NFL. We have some good stories from the 2019-2020 season such as Allen Lazard and David Montgomery, and we hope to see Hakeem Butler back and competing for time on the field next year.

I haven't seen much about our current seniors - at least the ones that don't play long-snapper - and whether we have a chance to get anyone in the draft this year. Maybe some of you folks that live in Central Iowa have heard more.

I'll post some summaries of the seasons that our current group had in the NFL this year.
