26-27 Wrestling Recruiting

I hesitate to copy & paste paywall content, but I will here to get this recruiting thread going. Matscout Willie does a nice job of summarizing where we are & where we should go.

Iowa State Cyclones
Needs: Everything

First Call: #42-Mac Crosson (IA) and #45-Max Dhabolt (IA)

Why: Guess how many commits ISU has for 2026. Wrong. Zero. They have no commits for next year and had just one (#14-Christian Castillo) in 2025. That's not to say Coach Dresser can't recruit. No, far from it. It's to say the Cyclones should have a gang of money. And they'll need it. 8 of this year's 10 starters will be JR's or SR's.

The good news is that the state of Iowa has an above average group of prospects in 2027 - ten Big Boarders in total.

If I were Dresser & Co., I'd start by locking down Crosson and Dhabolt to get off to an early start before hitting more both in-state and nationally.

Who They Are: Crosson and Dhabolt were both 3rd at state as FR and won state titles as Sophs. Dhabolt also made Fargo finals. Both are growing significantly and I think could project to very fine starters in the 165-174 range.

Others: #38-Dawson Youngblut (IA), #50-Gavin Landers (IA), #53-Grayson Fuchs (MI), #71-Brayden Koester (IA)

HVAC complaint

So now that it's starting to heat up, I turned on the AC last night and it wouldn't come on. The AC unit is only 2 1/2 years old and I had the HVAC company do an annual checkup on my AC unit just a few weeks ago, so I wasn't very happy. Of course, this all happens on a Friday night so all I get is the company's answering machine and I know there's no way I can get one of their techs to come fix it until Monday at the very earliest. Meanwhile, the temps are supposed to be mid-80s today and near 90 on Sunday and Monday.

After spending a few hours poking around trying to diagnose the problem, I discovered the issue. When the HVAC tech came to our house a few weeks ago to do the AC checkup, he inserted the breaker thing upside down into the AC power box on the side of my house, so the unit had no power. I re-inserted it right side up into the power box and the AC popped on just fine. Now I'm wondering if I should call the HVAC company back and leave another message indicating that I fixed their error, or if I should just let them do a service call to see if they can identify their own screw up and see if they try to charge me for it.

I'm tempted to do the latter because I'm a little pissed about another issue. When this HVAC company did their annual checkup on my AC, they told me the run capacitor on my unit is starting to get weak (again, the unit is only 2 1/2 years old). They recommended that I have them install a new Soft Start Kit ($323.51) and High Performance Run Capacitor ($319.82) for a total of $643.33 plus tax. Now I know little about HVAC, but I'm pretty sure I can pick up a brand new capacitor for around $30 and install it myself after watching a YouTube video.

It just torks me off how these companies rip folks off. I'm still trying to decide if I should let them come to my house to see if they charge me for fixing their own screw up.

Restaurant tipping

Would you be more likely to go to a restaurant that added a little over 20% to all of their item prices when compared to comparable restaurants and then did not give you an option to tip?

You could leave additional cash or could request to leave an additional tip on a credit card receipt, but the default would be that there is no option for leaving a tip and no expectation to do so.

So as a couple of examples:
A normally $9.99 menu item would be changed to $12.25
A normally $26 menu item would be changed to $32
A total of $120 in items ordered would change to around $146.50

CF Villain Bracket Nomination Thread

As the cartoon bracket is finishing we want to get a jump start on next bracket which is Villains.

Below is a list committee people have put together as usual I will pitch for new blood to join the team. Also as a committee we have been looking at format of what should or shouldn't be in so list of nominee's isn't incredibly large.

@2speedy1 had some great insights that would of helped the cartoon bracket but sadly it got after cartoon bracket was announced.

We are looking to keep the superhero/comic book characters to a minimum, and possibly eliminate monsters and robot villains as well as horror to make things more manageable.

Friday OT - School’s Out Forever!

It’s the last day of school in a lot of places around Iowa. That includes Ames.

Do you have any celebrations that you did annually as a child to celebrate the last day of school? Any time-honored shenanigans? Any good stories?

Did you live in a location where you got to see your friends during the summer, or were you maybe out in the middle of the country and didn’t get to see anybody until the first day of school the next year?

Bring Her Back (new horror movie)

Horror movie fans. Oof.

Not sure who’s seen the trailer for this new horror movie. I don’t take horror movies lightly. I love a few. Hate a lot more. But I love going to them.

This is one of the most ****** up visceral grotesque disturbing yet at the same time incredibly sad and visually stunning horror movies I can recall.

Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water) is absolutely brilliant in this role and while she won’t be nominated for awards because it’s a horror movie she should be. She’s better than Toni Collette in Hereditary in my opinion.

Won’t be for everyone. I don’t do body horror to well and this is next level. No joke I spent probably 15 honest minutes not able to look at the screen.

But for general horror fans this is a must. It’s just a really truly well done movie that happens to be horror amped up. This will stick with me awhile.

On That Note: Catch

Apologies to OTN contributors for the delay this week. The holiday, combined with my life & work flow, we decided to push it back a couple of days.

This week, we are looking for songs with the following in title or lyrics: catch, caught, grab, seize, clench, grip, hook, capture.

Inspiration for the topic: Last Friday, I was in St. Louis for Battlehawks game and in pregame I caught a pass from our very own former ISU QB Seneca Wallace.

"On That Note” is presented weekly by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.
