Twister Sister Summary - where the gray hair grows

You always have to love home cooking and the Hilton served up some for the Cowpokes. This was not an easy win in any way, shape or form and had some really ugly aspects to it. The first quarter saw both teams feeling each other out. OSU was bolstered by the return of Mack who score the team's first 7 points. ISU meanwhile was slowly inching ahead and answered everything OSU could put up. Every time OSU would creep within five or so points someone stepped up and hit a big shot and would expand the lead once more. This was very much a team game for ISU as different players all contributed across the board. The biggest draw from this game is realizing that like KU, OSU is not a very good shooting team. If it didn't go inside, it likely wasn't going in the basket. So, that is what OSU did all game long was use speed and size to pound inside. Fortunately, the ISU defense did just enough to stave off any serious comebacks and OSU helped by taking some ill advised outside shots that nearly bent the rim they were so off. The first half was just solid for the sisters. Good shooting, good defense, and most of all good rebounding. This resulted in a nice half time lead of 11 points and the rest was just hanging on.

The second half statistically was a dead heat. It shouldn't have even been close. The ladies were shooting pretty well and still playing defense/rebounding, but lordy it got ugly in the fourth quarter. I've never seen so many unforced turnovers in a game in quite some time. None of our point guards were immune, but Maggie seemed to find multiple ways to give the ball back to OSU which led to some easy transition buckets and ame the game closer than it should have been. Bad passes, lack of focus, etc. all led to turnovers which totaled 21 for the game. More gray hair for the coaching staff.

I think from a coaching perspective, leaving Maggie out there was a good learning experience. Fen finally rescued/relieved her by bringing Rae in. Her physicality slowed down OSU and she picked up some key charging calls that forced turnovers on OSU as well. In the end it was a workmanlike victory as the ladies seemed to have answers for everything OSU had to offer.

One other area for gray hair growing is free throws. Yes, you knew I'd get there didn't you? What has happened lately to this team? Missing ten free throws and hitting only 63% is inexcusable for an ISU squad. This is another reason the game shouldn't have been close. Joens is one of the top (was) free throw shooters in the conference and in the past three games she's gone 14-25 from the line or 56%. Something is very wrong there. Fatigue? She doesn't show it on the court.

Observations:
Maggie gets the Jekyll/Hyde award for the game. She scored key baskets, made free throws, played lots of minutes, BUT she personally accounted for FOURTEEN turnovers. Is that an ISU record for one person? Is that a record for remaining in a game under Fennelly while making those mistakes?

Joens. She reminds me of Seanna Johnson from a few years ago. A person could just keep writing the same things each game and be right. Joens grinds and powers her way to double digit points and rebounds nearly every game. 23 and 14 for this one. Only blemish was her free throw shooting.

Scott. She's back folks. Playing at a consistently high level now. I caught myself wondering whether it would be she or Joens who gets knocked to the second team all conference this year. I'm guessing it will be Scott. Her all around game is in fine form right now.

Camber - not the best game offensively, but those 7 boards were huge. When you aren't scoring you show up in other places and she does. Very solid defensively.

Posts - they are dividing up the minutes between Kane, Nez and Scott. Scott gets the bulk and the other two play when needed.

Wise - still working her way back and getting key minutes. Up to about 12 this time. Still not scoring, but she does other things. Would just like to see her start to find the hoop.

Another big game this Saturday. OU is coming to town and this is a revenge game in a way. Never should have lost down there. Let's hope we are firing on all cylinders and leave the weekend in 4th place in the conference and working our way into the tournament talk again. See you all there.

Hits, Guys and Misses

Often on local sports radio here in Omaha the on-air guys try to rank their recruiting classes, sometimes in hindsight, sometimes projecting the future. They label recruits as a hit, a miss or a guy. Roughly, a "hit" is someone who contributes in a fairly substantial way and lived up to the recruiting hype and a "guy" is someone who plays some and helps the team but was not necessarily crucial to improving the team.

So for example, our 2016 class at ISU, I might rate in this way:
Sean Foster .8893 (miss) Chase Allen .8655 (guy) Deshaunte Jones .8577 (hit) Eyioma Uwazurike .8504 (hit) Jalen Martin .8499 (miss) JaQuan Bailey .8469 (hit) Kene Nwangwu .8426 (guy) Jacob Park .8417 (miss) Lawrence White .8537 (guy) David Montgomery .8348 (hit) Zeb Noland .8300 (miss) Oge Odeogu .8292 (miss) Arnold Azunna .8263 (guy) D’Andre Payne .8248 (hit) Joshua Bailey .8234 (guy) Tymar Sutton .8213 (miss) Thadd Daniels .8200 (miss) Romelo Webster .8153 (miss) Jamahl Johnson .8147 (hit) Dylan Soehner .8125 (guy) Josh Mueller .8067 (miss) Jatairis Grant .8050 (guy) Keenan Forbes .8032 (miss) Clifford Fernandez .7998 (guy) Carson Lensing .7920 (guy) Justin Stewart .7919 (miss) Karson Green .7859 (miss) Steve Wirtel .7797 (hit)

Obviously this is very subjective and that is what can make it interesting, to see how people differ on various recruits. For example, Foster has played some, but certainly has not lived up to his recruiting ranking, so I call that a miss. Some might rate him a guy since he has stayed all the way and did play and contribute. Jacob Park is what some might call a hit since he started so many games, but he could be a guy because he never really fulfilled his potential. I rated him as a miss because he just abandoned the team, maybe he had good reason, but just from a team standpoint I think he was a miss. Anyway, share your thoughts on the class if you wish. Thanks.

Impact of Hawk fans on Cyclone Fanatic....

I have heard from an increasing number of posters and former posters on this site, that they are spending less time both reading and posting on CF. The reason I hear is that it is becoming more and more of a site for Hawk fans, and that it is no longer fun to post or read. I share those thoughts, and wonder what others think. I am not saying any action should be taken, just posting my opinion. Wonder what other Cyclone fans think.

WBB vs. Oklahoma State @ Hilton 2/5/2020

The Iowa State women’s basketball team (12-8, 4-5, Big 12) returns to Hilton Coliseum as it squares off with Oklahoma State (12-9, 3-6 Big 12) on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. on Cyclones.tv. The Cyclones trail the alltime series 36-31, but the Cyclones have won five of the last six against OSU, including sweeping the Cowgirls last season. Iowa State is looking for its second-straight sweep of OSU this season.

(The actual press release from Cyclones.com for this game had all the information for the first meeting with OSU in Stillwater.)

Can we put this to bed?

That fans that are critical of this team and this coach are somehow rooting for the team to lose or are lesser fans? The crowd at the game was locked, loaded, and ready to explode if given the opportunity by this team. 14,000+ to watch a 7-6 team that got blown out by its rival and lost to a 1-9 Florida A&M team.

Save the lectures about being "good" or "loyal" fans. Iowa State fans have proven that over and over and over again. We can cheer on this team AND be wondering what the hell the future looks like and where this program is going.

End rant.

We Lost an Iowa HS Coaching Legend Today

Per multiple reports Coach Bob Sanger lost his battle with cancer this morning. I consider myself very fortunate to have known him and learned directly from him. I am better because of him. RIP Coach, the many you have influenced will finish what you started from Hancock County across the country.

DSM Metro Daycare Costs

What is everyone paying per week for day care costs?

We're getting things, try anyway, lined up for day care when our little one comes. We are trying to secure a spot for an in-home daycare for our infant. The local daycare center is our back-up plan in case we can't get an in-home.
Daycare center = $240
In-home: one was $150 and the other is $185.

Looking to see what others are paying so I can get a sense of the range in the metro area.
