Iowa State Themed Kicks

I have spent more hours than I care to admit researching and buying Iowa State themed shoes. I stick to the major brands (Nike, Adidas, Puma, and Asics (Onitsuka Tiger)). I also tend to focus on a vintage look so the shoes I will post are the result of that search. I am still searching for the right pair of Reebok's, but will find them eventually.

Let's start with the Nike Dunk Lows. You will want to search for Midas Gold. Fair warning...they are expensive. Watch out for fakes and fake websites selling these. Make sure they are from a reputable website. Ebay is a surprisingly good place to pick these up (make sure to purchase a pair with "Authentic Guarantee". A solid pair will run you between $110-150.

Another Nike Dunk Low that could work is the "University Red". These look incredible if you also buy yellow shoe laces to replace the white ones. They truly pop at any tailgate. Price is similar in the $100-120 range.

Nike also lets you build a custom dunk low. You can get an ISU theme shoe that way as well (cost in the $135 range).

I have always been a huge fan of Puma shoes. Their vintage look around the Palermo line is solid. I was able to pick up a pair of red and yellow Palermos when I was in the UK and they are incredible. They just pop. The UK version doesn't have the "tag" like the US version, but they are a solid look. Price is about $90 plus shipping.

Puma also makes a sneaker version, but I don't think I have the bone structure to pull this look off. They are around $80 with shipping (search for red and yellow Future Rider)
1719244161215.png

Next up is Adidas. Finding red and yellow themed vintage looking Adidas is costly. Pairs typically range in the $175 - 200 range. They are pricey, but they are absolutely stunning. You can search for Adidas Warszawa SPZL Noble Marron Birth Yellow if you are interested. I just received a pair and they are now my clubhouse leader for most beautiful ISU themed shoe.

Finally, there is Asics (Onitsuka Tiger). These shoes are not sold in the US any longer. Around 5 years ago, the US sold the red and yellow shoe below. They are super comfortable and I wear these for big games. I have had amazing luck in them, so they are my superstitious ISU shoe. Not going to lie, they are expensive. They can be over $300 if you can find them. But they are worth it (model ONITSUKA TIGER EDR 78 'RED YELLOW' 1183B395-600).

More affordable Tigers are the Mexico 66 (ONITSUKA TIGER MEXICO 66 'WHITE RED YELLOW' 1183A201-108). They are in that $110-150 range. I don't own this pair yet, but they are on my radar.

This is far from an exhaustive search. Post your favorite ISU shoes as I am looking to grow my collection.

What are the loudest moments in Jack Trice Stadium's history?

I've been to some crazy games in JTS's history, but what are the loudest moments you can recall?

I know it's probably recency bias but I think Rocco punching in the go-ahead TD against UCF this last season is the loudest I can recall.

One that I think will get buried in this thread but I want to give a shoutout to is Jarvis West's pass to Allen Lazard against K-State in 2014. 1:07:03

Rule Changes for College Football in 2025

One of the main ones is addressing the faking of the injuries to delay the offense:

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Wednesday approved modifications to the injury timeout rules in football, beginning with the 2025-26 season.

Under the new rule, if medical personnel enter the field to evaluate an injured player after the ball is spotted by the officiating crew for the next play, that player's team will be charged a timeout.

If the team does not have any timeouts remaining, a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty will be assessed.

The injury timeout proposal was made by the NCAA Football Rules Committee after many in the college football community raised concerns about strategies in which players fake an injury to stop the opposition's momentum or to avoid using an allotted timeout.

This has been a topic of discussion for the NCAA Football Rules Committee in recent years. Before the 2021 season, a framework was instituted that allows a school or conference to request a postgame video review headed by Steve Shaw, the NCAA secretary-rules editor/national coordinator of officials, regarding questionable actions involving injuries.

If it was determined that a player faked an injury to manipulate the rules, the offending team's conference was notified, and any possible disciplinary action could be made by the conference office.

The impetus for the rule change next season is to provide an in-game mechanism that can curtail the faking of injuries because Football Rules Committee members think these actions negatively affect the overall perception of the game.

Overtime timeouts

The panel also approved a rule change regarding overtime timeouts. If a game reaches a third overtime, each team will have one timeout beginning with the third overtime until a winner is determined.

Previously, teams were allotted one timeout for each overtime period. At the start of the third overtime, teams alternate running 2-point plays until a winner is decided.

Football Rules Committee members want to keep the action moving once a game reaches a third extra period.

Other rule changes

The panel approved:
  • When the decision on instant replay is announced, the referee will only say that the call on the field is "upheld" or "overturned." The terms "confirmed" and "stands" will not be used.
  • No offensive player can be in the direct line of the snap to the potential kicker or within the frame of the snapper on punts for the formation to qualify as a scrimmage kick formation. If a team is not in scrimmage kick formation, it must have five players numbered 50 through 79 on the line of scrimmage. Additionally, if the snapper is on the end of the line by formation, the snapper will lose scrimmage kick protection, and the opposition can line a player over the snapper.
  • If any player on a kickoff-return team makes a "T" signal with his arms during the kick, the team gives up the right to return the kick, and the play will be whistled dead.
  • Enhanced rules regarding simulating action at the snap and words or signals that distract opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play will also be effective next season. No player can call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of the offensive signals. The defensive terms "move" and "stem" would be reserved for players on that side of the ball and could not be used by the offense.
  • After the two-minute timeout in either half, if the defense commits a foul with 12 or more players on the field and all the players participate in the play, the officials will administer a 5-yard penalty. The offensive team would have the option to reset the game clock back to the time at the start of the play. If the 12th player is attempting to leave the field and has no influence on the play, the defensive team will be penalized 5 yards with no adjustment to the game clock.
  • Coach-to-player communication, similar to technology implemented for the Football Bowl Subdivision last year, will be a permissive option for teams that compete in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Masters Week is upon us. Other than on Monday (soften the course up a bit?) the weather looks like it will be pretty good. Cooler than normal.

2025 NFL Draft - Call your shot

The NFL draft is always one of my favorite sporting events of the year. Even more so this since we should have a few Clones have their names called. Where do you see our guys going? Call your shot
Jaylin Noel - 38 (2nd round) to the Patriots
Jayden Higgins - 54 (2nd round) to the Packers
Darien Porter - 80 (3rd round) to the Colts
Jalen Travis - 179 (6th round) to the Browns

Tax ?

I am using the HR/block tax program, and am wondering why I am being taxed for a Roth IRA distribution from an account that's over 5 years old? I have a tax appt. tonight but I'm pissed i have to pay to see one. I usually do my taxes myself. It even says on the 1099 that none of it is taxable income. When I withdrew the money the people who I go through said it was tax free

Ideas for Transfer Rules

This basketball transfer season is just nuts once again with players ane coaches all moving around before the season is done. It really takes away from the NCAA Tournament.

For basketball (men's & women's) the portal shouldn't open until after the National Championship game. Perhaps let it open the second day after that game.

Now this part goes for all sports that start in the Fall Semester and carry over to the Spring Semester. If a player is going to transfer, allow them to take "incompletes" on whatever they're enrolled in for the Spring semester I'd they choose and allow them move to their next school right away. Sure they won't be able to enroll in classes, but they can move asap and join the program without being in Spring classes. They all already take Summer classes so they should be able to be eligible if enrolled in Summer classes. Let the kids leave and start working with the programs they'll be at for the next season. With the amount of money being spent, making these kids sit around and miss Spring Ball practices is goofy.

I'll add this, if you transfer and go to a new program and take part in their Spring Ball practices but then want to transfer before the season starts...you get hit with missing a year. ***By this I mean if someone transfers in for Spring Ball but then wants to transfer after Spring Semester finishes...this would be trying to transfer twice between seasons.***

Need info on an old Iowa rock band, please help!!

Back in the early 90s, a family friend brought over a cassette tape of this band called The Hard Boys. It was basically the equivalent of what 2 Live Crew was to the rap world. They were funny, and had a bit of a country sound to their music as well. I have been searching the internet from time to time over the last 7 or 8 years, trying to find out anything I could about this band. No luck. A few months back, I found a music msg board where a couple of people had been looking for info on this band. I have been e-mailing back in forth with these people and a couple other people have e-mailed me and none of them know anything about this band and either. A lady e-mailed me recently and said she knew that the band was from southern Iowa, and recorded 2 albums in Indianola in the early 90s. This is all the info I have right now. Has anyone heard of them? I would really like to know the band members names and any other info I can find out. My goal is to track down a band member to see if it is ok that I build them a website so other people can enjoy their music as much as I have for 20 + years. Thanks in advance

WNBA draft

We haven’t had the pleasure of watching this young (and I mean young) lady play in the states. Is she ready for the pros? That’s a wait and see in my opinion, but she sure is fun to watch. Malonga is uber talented for a 6’6” post and projected to be #2 in the draft. Her biggest detriment is going to be physicality. Personally, I think doing the college route would have been good for her development. Going to be fun to see how she gets along.

Movie the more you watch it the more you love it

What are movies you have always liked or loved yet still every time you visit it again you think it’s actually better than the last time you watch it and it’s aged incredibly well.

Mine I just started watching for the umpteenth time is Michael Clayton. Seriously might be a top ten movie ever for me. And the fact it came out the same year as No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood is crazy. Three all timers.

Guide to American Pizzas: 7 Most Popular Pizza Types in the USA

I had a catered work lunch last week and the company brought in a highly touted local pizza. It was New York Style and fairly expensive. The pizza was New York Style and was one of the worst I have ever had. It was worse than thin crust Totinos frozen cheese pizza from my ISU years.

This lead me down a rabbit hole. Do most people really think NY style pizza is so good?

Here is a comprehensive webpage I found comparing common pizza styles in the US.:

Guide to American Pizzas: 7 Most Popular Pizza Types in the USA
American Style Pizza:
"American-style pizza typically has a round shape with medium thickness, a relatively low dough hydration, and a dense and chewy texture. The dough often contains a higher
percentage of vegetable oil and sugar, and it is usually baked in a conveyor oven. The tomato sauce is usually heavily seasoned, and the pizza is generously topped with standard toppings, as the relatively thick crust can easily support them. The cheese used can be mozzarella or other types, including cheese substitutes (god forbid)"

New York Style Pizza:
"A classic New York pizza, also known as a “New York slice,” is a thin and chewy pizza with a diameter of 40-50cm or 16″-20″. It is cut into eight equal slices and baked in deck ovens at around 300C/570F directly on the oven’s stone for about 7 minutes. The dough is made from high-gluten flour, and grated dry mozzarella cheese (whole milk low moisture, or WMLM mozzarella) is used. It is typically sold by the slice and usually reheated when ordered for eating “on the go.”"

New Haven Pizza:
"The New Haven pizza is known for its well-done doneness and is characterized by its flat crust and charred bottom. It is typically large, never perfectly circular, and sliced into small pieces (usually 16 slices or more, depending on the pizza’s size). Unlike the New York Slice, which is sold by the slice, the New Haven pizza is only available as a whole pizza for dine-in or delivery."

Sicilian Pizza:
"Sicilian pizza is characterized by a relatively thick crust with a crispy bottom and a soft, chewy, and relatively dense crumb, which slightly resembles bread or focaccia. The toppings on the Sicilian pizza vary, ranging from plain tomatoes and cheese to combinations of vegetables and meats."

Detroit Style Pizza:
"Detroit pizza is renowned for its thick, soft crust and is typically served in large squares. What sets Detroit pizza apart from other styles is the “crown” of caramelized cheese that covers the entire crust. Describing or comparing the taste and texture of this caramelized cheese are hard to describe or compare to any other pizza or food."

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza:
"The deep dish pizza is generously topped with a thick layer of sauce and toppings, with the sauce always placed on top of the cheese and toppings. This gives it the appearance of a pie rather than a traditional pizza. It is traditionally eaten using a knife and fork, as it is considered a dish in its own right. The assembly of a deep dish pizza involves placing the cheese directly on the dough, followed by additional toppings if desired. On top of the toppings, a chunky-textured sauce made from crushed tomatoes is added, and grated hard cheese such as Pecorino or Parmesan can be sprinkled on top of the sauce."

Midwest Style Pizza:
"Midwest-style pizza is round and has a thin, flat crust. The sauce tends to be thick and slightly sweet, made from crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, or a combination of both. The toppings vary depending on the region and the specific type of pizza. Some well-known sub-styles of Midwest -style pizza include tavern/bar style pizza, Chicago thin crust, and St. Louis style pizza."
