Posted this in the game thread but I felt it deserved its own post.

I theorize that Dom Nelson takes this Iowa State team from a top 20 team with most likely a Sweet 16 peak to a legitimate national title contender. He is the most important bench player for any national title contender. And somehow, someway, he has single handidly taking this teams offensive efficiency through the roof.

After reading these facts, please try to make a counter argument.

Tonight, Iowa State scores 8 points in 8 minutes. Dom comes in, goes bull in a china shop, turnover, bad free thrown shooting and he goes out. 5 minutes of playing time. Iowa State on pace for a 40 point night. Enter Dom Nelson. After he enters, scores at a 78 point pace.

Mississippi State. 67 point game pace. Enter Dom Nelson. 101 point pace the rest of the way.

Creighton? Start the game at a 20 point pace. Enter DOM Nelson. 84 point pace the rest of the way.

Syracuse? Start the game at a 30 point pace. Enter DOM Nelson! Dom comes in for 3 minutes and the team scores 8 points, a 107 point pace. Next 7 minutes team scores at an 80 point pace. Re-Enter DOM Nelson!! Rest of the game is a 112 point pace. Gambling was very similar to those with a 115 point pace after Dom's seconds insertion into the game.

Iowa? 44 point pace before Dom, only plays 3 minutes. No cyclone points while Dom was in. 80 point pace the rest of the first half and the game. Poor coaching not to try the Dom Nelson effect a 2nd time.

Eastern Illinois? 64 point pace before Dom. 83 point pace after.

Purdue game Iowa State scores 16 points in twelve minutes. Enter DOM NELSON!!! Dom draws 2 fouls, commits one, has 2 turnovers and misses a shot and completely changes the momentum of the game. Dom only plays 9 minutes but before he enters, they are on pace for a 54 point game. From the moment he enters they are on a 93 point pace.

It's not every game, but the only games where this pattern doesn't hold, Iowa State hasn't struggled on offense at all. And there hasn't been a single time where the offense was struggling where the turning point was DOM FREAKING NELSON!!!! Entering the game. And these aren't minor improvements. They are massive improvements. Our offensive efficiency after DOM NELSON enters the game must be through the ******* roof. Can any CF staffer por through the data and give us complete stats on offensive efficiency bere Dom enters and after?

And it's not like he is generating all this offense. A lot of these games he barely plays. He just changes the vibe. If Tamin, Jefferson and Milan were replaced by decent Big 12 players and Dom was the main scoring threat, he would average 17 points a game on 20 shots, 6 boards, 1.5 assist and 4.7 turnovers a game and the team is on the outside looking in.

The Achilles Heel of all these good TJ teams has been offensive funks. It is what has limited TJ to having Top 15 teams to.having a Top 3 team. We all assumed the missing piece was more reliable offensive consistency. Maybe a Tyrus McGee or Donovan Jackson off the bench or a Georges Niang or Marcus Fizer who you could go to any time and know they would deliver. Turns out that missing piece is Dom Nelson, a senior transfer who plays sparingly and has middling stats, who just might be the most important bench piece on a Final 4 team

Vinnie Johnson was called The Microwave because he could come off the bench and heat up an offense quickly by scoring in bunches. That's not Dom. From now on, for me, Dom Nelson shall be known as "The Defibrillator". I need an NIL shirt of Dom using a defibrillator on Cy and I need it yesterday.

Fine, he’s ‘The Defibrillator’ on offense but ‘The Turnstile’ on defense. Perhaps he’s still coming back from injury or something but he got blown by repeatedly tonight.
Yeah, and a turnover machine. How they are using him is perfect. Don't change a single thing.

Offense heart stops? Give it a 5 minute jolt of Dom Nelson. Doesn't work? Try another jolt.

Still no response from the patient? I'm sorry, but it's time to call it. Your Cyclone offense has passed away (theorectical, so far. every Cyclone patient has been revived by no more than 2 jolts of Dom Nelson).

St. Johns is a weird one. Iowa State began the game white hot, 93 point pace. Then we used the Defibrillator on a healthy offense. In those 3 minutes, the cyclone offense was on a 120 point pace. But using The Defibrillator put that healthy offense into cardiac arrest. Dom leaves the game and the offense goes scoreless for 3 minutes. Because of this cardiac arrest, the offense is on a 44 point pace the next 5.5 minutes. For 3 minutes of you get a steady heartbeat of a 80 point pace. For the remainder of the game, the offense was at an 85 point pace. Not back to normal but if you don't read the instructions for The Defibrillator, you can't expect the patient to recover immediately.

Tonight Dom was a warm body and extra fouls and he provided a bit of a spark offensively. If we ever have to use him a lot we are in trouble but sparingly he can be useful in certain situations.
A BIT of a spark? 40 point scoring pace before he enters. The rest of the game the team scored at a 78 point pace. The Defibrillator didn't even play very well. He is just there to revive the cyclone.

The more I research this, the more uncanny it gets. Correlation does not prove causation, but it also doesn't disprove it. The Debribillator should only be used in 3-5 minutes spurts and only in case of an offensive emergency.

It's after midnight and I might be hallucinating, so someone please check my math.

FDU is another example of using The Defibrillator on a healthy offense, although not nearly as extreme (96 up to 110 down to 70 recovering to 96). In fact, the Iowa State offense ends the first half on a 120 point pace. 2 start the second half, the offense is scoreless for 2 minutes and then has a 3 minute stretch at a 147 point pace. Overall that's an 88 point pace but the wildness is not healthy. The Defibrillator comes in for 3 minutes and that leads to a nice steady 90 point pace for 7 minutes.

Stonehill shows the dangers of using The Defibrillator on a healthy offense in each half.

Long beach another good example. 120 pt pace until The Defibrillator comes in on the first half and they finish the half at an 80 point pace. 2md half is a 71 point pace until the Defibrillator comes in at garbage time.

If Iowa State's offense is a human heart and the coaches use The Defibrillator on it, the Iowa State offense will react like a real heart would to a real defibrillator.

I thought later in his playing time he closed out a bit better defensively; this was his first time playing in a game in like a month I think and that aspect is going to be trickiest.

He did get BU moving on defense a bit and that looks to be his go-to.

A hallmark of championship teams is that they have guys who make a real difference with the limited minutes. Heise, Nelson, Batemon and Pleta all rise up at various times and as good as our starters are, there is very little concern when a starter leaves the floor, which is a testament to the work that these guys do.

Love this. Totally agree. Nelson is critical.

To be fair, playing defense right up in someone's business is not easy. You see a lot of guys being called great defenders that routinely play 5' off on the perimeter. Sure, it's hard to get around a guy like that, but that also opens up all sorts of passing opportunities, so even if we get blown by a few times, that heat is messing up other parts of their offense.

I've never seen anything like it. He"s critical to final 4 hopes, but they are still a great team without him. There are at least 7 guys that would lower the floor of this team way more if they were gone.

He doesn't bring instant offense. He brings instant chaos. Maybe it throws off the other team so much that they can't recover.

I really appreciate the energy Nelson contributes, but I think Heise, Batemon, and Pleta are more important off the bench.

I agree, but I also agree with the first post. The nickname is spot on. Love it all.

He's the worst defender on the team by far. While he was in guys blew by him constantly. Being used as an offensive spark plug should be his only role until (and if) he improves there.

So your hypothesis is that Dom Nelson alone is not just what kicks our offense into gear but also keeps it in gear after he’s back on the bench?

Its an absolutely bonkers theory that makes no sense at all. But its true every single time. Its also true that when he comes in while the offense is humming, it puts the offense in the tank (until he enters a 2nd time to fix it).

I didn't analyze last 10 minutes of blowouts against the sisters of the poor. I figured there would be a lot of exceptions in those weird minutes, but otherwise, the pattern has existed the entire season.
