***2026 Iowa State Football Season Thread***

ESPN article on how teams "revamped" their squad this off-season. They rank us dead last in that regard in the Big 12.

16. Iowa State Cyclones

Key additions: QB Jaylen Raynor, DE Isaac Terrell, DT Bryson Lamb

Key departures: QB Rocco Becht, DT Domonique Orange, RB Carson Hansen

Top incoming recruits: WR Jeffrey Roberts, WR Malcolm Watkins, OT Benji Makelela

Biggest coaching move: Matt Campbell's historic ISU tenure ended on Dec. 5, and hours later the Cyclones had a new coach in Washington State's Jimmy Rogers. The former South Dakota State player and coach brought over several of his assistants, including defensive coordinator Jesse Bobbit. He hired Tyler Roehl, who coached ISU's running backs in 2024 and spent last season coaching tight ends for the Detroit Lions, as offensive coordinator. Roehl and Rogers opposed each other in the Dakotas rivalry as Roehl was OC for North Dakota State and Rogers the DC for South Dakota State.

What went wrong: Campbell took his coaches and 24 players with him to Happy Valley, including 14 starters. A total of 50 scholarship players moved on via the portal during the coaching transition, leaving Rogers and his coaches with a massive rebuilding project. Rogers and his staff had already experienced a similar roster flip last year in Pullman and did a nice job of adding to the roster in a short period, but ISU will still be undergoing a serious reset after a decade of consistency under Campbell.

What went right: Roehl was a key contributor to the Cyclones' offensive success during its run to the Big 12 title game in 2024, so bringing him back to Ames was a smart move. Raynor, a three-year starter at Arkansas State who put up more than 9,800 total yards, gives this offense a proven QB1 who will be able to replace Becht. He's coming in to lead a team that features more than 80 newcomers. The Cyclones' rebuilt receiving corps has good talent and could prove to be a strength. Bobbit was able to bring in several starters from his Washington State defense between Terrell, Lamb, Sullivan Schlimgen and Max Baloun and held onto five Cyclones with starting experience.

ONE CLUE SOLVED! - CONTEST TWO: Solve this puzzle to win a free Fanatic book by Chris Williams

ROUND TWO!

If you missed the first contest, read the original post in that thread to catch up.

A reminder: I wanted to celebrate our own @ChrisMWilliams and his Fanatic: Stories from 20 years inside Iowa State book with Rob Gray. I'll be giving away three books total and local ethical bagman @Cycsk is kindly helping me send them out.

HOW DO YOU SOLVE THIS PUZZLE?

To give people time to see this thread, there are two parts. PART ONE is below. I'll post PART TWO (by editing this post) on Thursday (June 4). The clue from PART ONE will help you solve PART TWO.

WANT A HINT?

To keep this thread visible, post something random (pets???) in this thread. If you do that, you can ask me a single question via private DM about PART ONE that I can answer with yes or no. One question per account.

That will give you a head start on PART TWO. Then once PART TWO is released, the first person that posts the solution in this thread wins.

THE PUZZLE:

PART ONE - What does this mean?

The year after the crash, Paul came to explain.
Aloysius tried too, but ignore the law of Latium.
From William's forest came intricate plates.
The smell of lavender preceeded the prize.
Now mull over the Colonel's past.
For that is where it comes from.

PART TWO:

The cross means another, says your kin.

TO WIN, WHAT DOES THAT SYMBOL MEAN?

BONUS CLUE TO HELP FIGURE OUT PART ONE:

Remember the alphabet was once smaller before it died.

BONUS CLUE 2:

Answer is not related to Iowa State or sports at all.

BONUS CLUE 3 (REFERS TO PART ONE) - FIXED TYPO (UNDERLINED):
The false eighth moon went dark thrice.

BONUS CLUE 4:

The forest was planted hundreds of years ago.

BONUS CLUE 5:

The crash didn't involve physical items.
(Also look at my post #141 in this thread for more context around this puzzle.)

BONUS CLUE 6:

The first two lines of PART ONE refer to a book.
(In response to someone, in post #168 in the thread, I clarified it is not a Douglas Preston book.)

BONUS CLUE 7:

The smell = synesthesia.

ONE CLUE HAS BEEN SOLVED:

Someone has correctly guessed that the first two lines in this puzzle refer to A Dictionary of Color book by Paul and Aloys (1930). I go into detail more in my post #177 here. As mentioned elsewhere, the book has no bearing on the final answer, it's simply the first step.

BONUS CLUE 8:

The lavender is elderly.
Since the correct book was figured out, I'll add "William's forest" = reinforcing the correct book, since it was published in PA and Pennsylvania's name actually means (William) Penn's forest/woods. My post #196 gives a bit more context.

Even if you already have the book, let me know in this thread if I can improve this process somehow. After the books, I might keep doing more contests for goodies from the CF Shop.

It's tough out there, so trying to spread the love. Any other thoughts or questions, let me know.

Uptick in spam calls

Has anyone else noticed a huge uptick in spam calls the past few months or is it just me? I get about 5-8 spam calls a day. Some of them are marked as potential spam and others are not. I have had a lot of calls recently asking if I had received my food card. I have been expecting some certain calls for quotes on house items so I have been answering more, but it has been really bad the past week or two. I wonder if I can find a way to bring the number down.

Next CF Bracket Best Iowa Towns/Cities Nomination Thread

As we wind down the fast food bracket on behalf of group that put it together I want to thank everyone for their participation in this.

I only know the numbers for first couple tournaments done but pretty sure voting for this fast food tournament set a record for participation.

Over 7,100 votes without a play-in involved. It makes the work put into these feel worth it so thank you.

I want to try to squeeze one more in. Pizza was next one up but feel we need a break from food.

Best Iowa towns/cities was one vote behind pizza so I'd like to go there.

Not sure how many on last committee will hold over so if any feel this is something you could lend your expertise in I would love to see new committee blood.

For this one having people pm me their list of towns from 1-64 outside of the committee might be needed more than ever.

Now let nominations begin.

Williams & Blum: Ranking Our Top Ten Favorite Cyclone Basketball Players

Chris Williams, Brent Blum, and Jake Brend rank their top ten favorite Iowa State basketball players of all time. Who makes the cut? The guys discuss from Northwest Bank in Ames on a special remote edition of Williams & Blum, presented by Mechdyne.

***WBB: 2029 Recruiting Thread***

Starting up 2029 -- Iowa just offered a 2030 recruit, so I better get 2029 up since 2030 may not be far behind. Not much here yet, but that'll probably change quickly over the next few months.

Let me know if there are any corrections needed.

Roster?

I know they have a lot going on with all the announcements. I would like to see the Roster updated on the Cyclones site. I count 14 wrestlers that have either left or graduated. It would be nice to know who we have to work with. I think T.J. Koester Gray shirted? So hopefully he is still with us plus the in coming freshman. Hopefully we add some transfers.
