What's streaming that's good TV/movies

With no sports and peeps recommended to stay at home, what are you watching or have watched that you can recommend?

I finished Altered Carbon 2 last week. Netflix. Would recommend if you have watched season 1. New story but would be way easier to understand if you've watched the previous. Good sci-fi.

Thinking of checking out the South Korean "Kingdom", also on Netflix.

In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

The Pokey Stix thread got me thinking about all the places I miss in Ames that have closed. What are yours?

Off the top of my head:

Gumby's: Pokey Stix and Pepperoni rolls
HomeTeam Pizza: Dirt cheap drunk food, 3 mediums for $10. Plus they had a cheesy commercial shot at Sterling.
Angies: Didn't seem to last long but that was a great after bar spot, always packed, good breakfast.
La Fuente: Margarita Challenge! Solid mexican food, although El Azteca topped it when they came to town.
The Truck Stop: Great food just a little out of the way. Cyclone Slam ftw
Battles: The original location, went downhill a bit once they moved to Welch and owner died.

Elwood Drive: Screw University Boulevard.

Obsession (new movie)

Went and saw the new horror movie Obsession this weekend. Pretty unheard of A- score from audience polls...for a horror movie that is very rare.

On its surface, the movie delivers great gory thrills, but the director and writer have actually crafted a devastating takedown of modern male entitlement and the toxic "Nice Guy" complex. While the film plays with the "crazy girlfriend" trope, the real monster isn't the girl at all.

As a social commentary, the film offers a fascinating, uncomfortable look at modern dating and the illusion of consent. It’s a brilliant horror film because the threat isn't a masked killer, it's the terrifyingly familiar face of a man who believes he is owed a woman’s heart. One of the best horror movies in a while and the two main characters I've never heard of but they are incredible and will both be stars.

Switching phone carriers

T-Mobile is forcing customers (not all but 8M I think) into a new plan even if you didn't ask for it, and increasing monthly plan cost. They have been pretty good overall but service is kind of hit and miss. Wondering what everyone things of the other big carriers like AT&T and Verizon. Specifically for anyone in MN but happily will listen to others in terms of customer service, issues, cost of plans, perks, etc.

Your Biggest "Coincidence"

Is there that one moment in your life when something utterly impossible, defying every odd, breathtakingly miraculous happened? A moment so jaw-dropping that it left you speechless, gasping, maybe screaming — completely undone by sheer astonishment? That unforgettable instant that still ambushes your memory out of nowhere, burned into your mind because it was simply too extraordinary to forget?

As a teenager, I went on field trips with a nature club. We'd get up early, travel to some unique wild area, and have a naturalist identify flowers, trees, and wildlife while explaining their biology, ecological niche, and natural beauty.

On one particular trip to a large wetland, our guide—who came across as a know-it-all show-off from the outset at 6:00 AM—seemed intent on impressing some girls in the group. His demeanor grew increasingly irritating as the day wore on. His specialty was birds, and he spent the morning pointing them out, especially rare ones. I kept quiet, knowing something about birds myself.

Eventually, we ended up on a barren dike with water on one side, a corn field on the other, and a small cluster of bushes between. The guide launched into a lengthy spiel about birds he'd supposedly seen in the area. Finally, I spoke up, hoping to make an impression of my own.

I pointed at the bushes and boldly announced without any evidence that there was a Yellow-breasted Chat—a rare bird I'd never seen before—in those bushes. To everyone's complete surprise, a Chat flew out, landed on a fence just 15 feet away in bright sunshine, and remained visible for about ten seconds.

I still can't explain how that happened. The odds must have been millions to one. Yellow-breasted Chats aren't found in marshes, don't perch on isolated fence lines in summer, and are rare even in ideal habitat. It still baffles me to this day—it's the closest I've ever come to experiencing something like telepathy.

What's everyone reading?

With the "main sports seasons" out of the way, I've found myself some more free time and have started up a new book series: The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks. I'm only halfway through the first book, but it's got me locked in... excited to se where it goes.

Exciting part about this series, is that I know it is complete. I've given up hope on Rothfuss and RR Martin.

After this is done I'll likely throw in a classic or two to change it up. What's everyone else been reading?
