Is there that one moment in your life when something utterly impossible, defying every odd, breathtakingly miraculous happened? A moment so jaw-dropping that it left you speechless, gasping, maybe screaming — completely undone by sheer astonishment? That unforgettable instant that still ambushes your memory out of nowhere, burned into your mind because it was simply too extraordinary to forget?

As a teenager, I went on field trips with a nature club. We'd get up early, travel to some unique wild area, and have a naturalist identify flowers, trees, and wildlife while explaining their biology, ecological niche, and natural beauty.

On one particular trip to a large wetland, our guide—who came across as a know-it-all show-off from the outset at 6:00 AM—seemed intent on impressing some girls in the group. His demeanor grew increasingly irritating as the day wore on. His specialty was birds, and he spent the morning pointing them out, especially rare ones. I kept quiet, knowing something about birds myself.

Eventually, we ended up on a barren dike with water on one side, a corn field on the other, and a small cluster of bushes between. The guide launched into a lengthy spiel about rare birds he'd supposedly seen in the area. Finally, I spoke up, hoping to make an impression of my own.

I pointed at the bushes and boldly announced without any reason that there was a Yellow-breasted Chat—a rare bird I'd never seen before—in those bushes. To everyone's complete surprise, a Chat flew out, landed on a fence just 15 feet away in bright sunshine, and remained visible for about ten seconds.

I still can't explain how that happened. The odds must have been millions to one. Yellow-breasted Chats aren't found in marshes, don't perch on isolated fence lines in summer, and are rare even in ideal habitat. It still baffles me to this day—it's the closest I've ever come to experiencing something like telepathy.

When I got married, my wife sold her townhome and moved into my house, and then we bought another house and put my old one on the market. Had it sold and then their loan fell through (for reasons that were present when I bought the house, grrr). Rented it for a couple years and then were just about to put it back on the market when my parents needed to find a place close to us. Mom passed in 2015 and Dad lived there until last Sunday when he passed away. It was like the house was meant to be available to them, and they got to spend the last years of their lives close to my sister and I and the grandkids.

Senior year of HS and knew I was going to ISU, had some friends a year older than me already there that became really good friends with guys on their floor. My friends told me I should room with one of their friends that was going to ISU next year. Didn’t really listen and just went random roommate and so did he…

Ended up getting assigned roommates with him, lived with him all but sophomore year at ISU and still one of my best friends today

Not really a coincidence, but more of a screwup. I was going to room at Iowa State with a friend from high school. We both put down each other's names as the person we would like to room with. On move-in day, I walked into my room only to find a completely different person sharing it. Turns out my friend was assigned to Helser and I was in Friley. His roommate's last name was the same as mine and it's not that common a last name. Turned out to be a good thing because that friend from high school has turned into an insufferable, pompous a$$hole.

In that politicians still fly commercial, maybe not so much a coincidence, but have found myself at different times on the same flights as Tom Harkin, Chet Culver, and Chuck Grassley. Also Tom Arnold (he probably flies private these days, if he ever comes back to Iowa).

Once saw James Brown (the football player, not the singer) walk by in the Detroit airport (again, before celebrities started flying private).

Ran into a friend from the United States one day on the Champs-Elysées in Paris.

Most importantly, met the future Mrs. Pourcyne at a poker game.

That's all I've got for Coinkydinks.

(until I remember another one)

Way back when MTV played music videos, I saw a band that I really liked and really got into their music. Then, I moved to Minnesota and started talking to a guy I met and he casually said he was in a band. Yep, he was the lead singer of the band I'd been listening to for years. Kind of blew my mind.

A friend in college and I decided to room together our second year. We were in a triple. Back in the 90s you didn’t know who was assigned until they sent the letter.

Get the letter and it lists me, the guy I was rooming with and the third was a guy with the same exact name but last name spelled slightly different but would be pronounced the same. Luckily the third rushed a frat so I wouldn’t have two roomies with the same name.
