2026 Garden Thread

Having a farming background and my love for Trees, I have combined the two for my next venture. Technically not garden, but rather Orchard, I decided to try to grow peach trees from seeds. After doing some research and watching some YouTube videos, and subsequently failing, I tweaked the method and tried my own. Early September of last year I cracked some pits to retrieve the seeds. After visually sorting them, I packed them in some moistened cedar shavings (with the idea that they have some natural bacterial/fungal resistance), put them in the back of the refrigerator in a sealed mayonnaise jar. This was an attempt to replicate the chilling hours (cold stratification) required for germination. A few days ago they started to sprout and my method turned out to be successful as 29 of 31 sprouted. I spent the morning potting them up and we’ll see what happens from here!IMG_0706.jpeg

ISU OC Tyler Roehl demands one thing from his players: "Play with physicality"

Misc: Fan Obstructions and visual Impairments

Watching the LAFC vs Seattle MLS game. LAFC has a bunch of fans with giant flags in the stands. While that looks cool on TV, can you imagine being a person sitting behind them with your view obstructed by that flag?

I’ve also seen this with some of the costumes and headgear that fans wear to get on TV. But again, what would you do if the person in front of you has one of those dumb giant hats that blocks your view of the field? Do you get into it with the fan or do you go directly to security to see if they’ll deal with it? Cause I’ve gotta imagine anyone self absorbed enough to wear a giant hats or costume isn’t the kind of person you want to deal with.

Just a random observation.

Survivor 50

May as well start this thread up now as there is already content dropping on it.

Found this one to be interesting today: https://ew.com/watch-survivor-50-cast-vote-first-players-out-of-game-exclusive-11881376 Looks like Rizzo, Kyle, Q, , Dee, Colby and Coach are going to be early targets. No one put Cirie which I find odd because she's played more than anyone but maybe they don't see her as a threat and maybe an easy vote later after some of the bigger players are taken out? Hopefully people see what snakes Savannah and Kamilla are and don't let them go deep into the game.

Going out on a limb here, I think someone from an older season wins this year and I also think some of the more recent season players are going to be big targets too so trying to think of someone that can navigate the old school and new school way of playing the game. I tend to agree with these odds as Charlie, Aubry, and Devens kind of fit that mold: https://bookies.com/news/survivor-winner-odds My guess is anyone that can stay under the radar early and adapt to however who is left post merge is used to playing the game will have the edge.

Also, does anyone think this could be Jeff's last season as host? It's a nice number to go out on so it's a possibility.

YouTube TV Getting Ability to Split Into 4 Screens

This would be a major feature advancement! Hope it happens soon!

Best Campustown Bars by Decade

Was thinking about this in the thread about old places in Ames that have since closed. Got me wondering what were the best spots in Campustown each decade. Other than Cy's and Welch ave station I feel like most everything there is new from this century.

When I was at school in the 2010s it was always Cys, Sips/Paddys, Welch Ave, and AJs were the big ones with some minor ones sprinkled in there (District was great for a bit too RIP). Charlie Yoke's closed before I was 21 and Outlaws was obviously big but I wasn't in that crowd. Curious what this is for the 70s/80s/90s/2000s? Would love to hear about some great hole in the wall spots too and what's in it's place now.

Fan Boundaries with Student Athletes

When I was first married, we lived in a western suburb of Chicago named Elmhurst and many Chicago Blackhawk players lived there as well. We would often see a young Jeremy Roenick and his defenseman roommate at a Greek breakfast restaurant named the Rainbow, which did brisk business. I never saw anyone approach Roenick, which is probably why he frequented the place - he could eat without being bothered.

Several months ago, a retirement age male board member related a story where he entered a small Ames bar to meet friends, saw a high profile female basketball player sitting alone at a table and approached her, "conversing for several minutes". He said she sat alone the entire time she was there, which he thought was "weird". The player was one of our first "unexpected" transfer portal losses.

I'm firmly in the camp that formal boundaries should be in place between fans and student athletes, especially female student athletes. An adult male wouldn't walk into a small towny bar, see an anonymous twenty year-old girl sitting alone at a table, walk up and engage her in conversation. I feel strongly the same should hold true for an ISU WBB player - she was sitting alone by choice - leave her alone. I said as much in the thread and was surprised by the number of people who felt otherwise.

It's a slow time of the ISU athletic year and I'm always interested in the opinions of others. I'm not talking about college-aged or young adults, rather mature adults ages 40 & over. Would you approach a female athlete sitting alone in a bar minding their own business? When is it permissible to approach a female student athlete in public? When is it permissible to approach any ISU student athlete in public?

Traeger Grill Raffle

Hey everybody - in addition to being a die hard Clones fan I’m also a member of the Ames Fire Department and a member of Ames Professional Firefighters Union - Local 625.

Here in about two weeks we’re gonna be hosting a golf tournament to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and one of the bundles we put together for a fundraising raffle is a pretty sweet smoker package.

If you didn’t know, the International Fire Fighters Association (IAFF) has a 70+ year partnership with the MDA raising over $700 million in that span. I’m proud to say that last year our Union was the second highest fundraising Union in the state with just over $20k and our goal is to get to $25k and number one this year.

But back to the grill package – we’re raffling this baby off with the ticket being drawn on June 6 during the after party of our tournament; you do not need to be present to win the raffle. Tickets are $50 and can be paid by Venmo.

Here’s everything that’s included in the package:
Traeger Woodridge WiFi Pellet Smoker $100 Fareway Meat Market Meat Bundle
Traeger Folding Front Shelf
Traeger Paper Roll Rack
2 Traeger meat probes
Traeger Grill Cover
Traeger BBQ Pigtail tool
4 Traeger Seasoning Selections
BBQ Tongs
Pitmaster Gloves
BBQ Sauce Pot & Baster
LED Grill Light
Hickory Smoker Pellets
Extra Wide Aluminum Roll

If interested we do still just a few spots left for foursomes team in the tournament. Teams are $320 and come with a cart, breakfast, lunch and an open bar at Dublin Bay afterwards.

CONTEST: Post your guess here to win a free Fanatic book by Chris Williams - WINNER CHOSEN

Been meaning to do this for quite some time.

I wanted to celebrate our own @ChrisMWilliams and his Fanatic: Stories from 20 years inside Iowa State book with Rob Gray.

I write the occasional story and I've found the blank page eventually pushes every writer into madness. It's a lot of pressure. I'm always amazed when people like Chris overcome that to put out an actual book.

In appreciation, I will be giving away THREE copies of his book.

Since I live in the distant badlands, local connector and overall mensch @Cycsk made an incredibly kind offer to help me obtain and ship them out.

There will be three separate contests and I'll space them out without overlap:

1.) Guess the score of an upcoming NBA game, closest wins.
2.) Solve an incomprehensible puzzle (that I create), first solution wins.
3.) PREMIUM ONLY: Solve another incomprehensible puzzle, first solution wins.

HOW DO YOU WIN THIS CONTEST?

In honor of the NBA playoffs, post in this thread your guess of the winner and final score of this specific game:

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER vs. SAN ANTONIO SPURS
Game 3 @ San Antonio
Friday, May 22 @ 8:30 PM eastern

You must make (or edit) your final guess in this thread before Game 3 tips off. One guess per account. No new accounts allowed. Correct winner with closest score guess wins the book.

To be safe, I suggest you post your initial guess now, so you give yourself a chance in case you get busy later this week and forget. Can also keep tabs on the first two games and edit your initial guess if you feel like anything has changed, eg: Wemby abducted by actual aliens.

LMK if I should add or change anything. Good luck!
