Improved Verizon Service at ISU events (and 5G)

I'd be so happy if this gets approved next week.

"Iowa State also will seek the board's permission to enter a five-year lease with Verizon aimed at improving cell phone coverage on campus in anticipation of new 5G technology next year. In the proposed lease, Verizon would install, at its expense, 14 "small cell" structures on campus light poles, including eight on the main campus, five in parking lots near the football stadium and one at the Veterinary Medicine campus. The proposed lease calls for Verizon to pay a signing bonus at the time of installation and a monthly fee for energy use and data connections."

On That Note - Add It To Your Collection

Welcome to another edition of On That Note - a weekly music related off topic discussion post hosted by myself, @cyclones500 and @CycloneRulzzz. Last week's post was songs about love in conjunction with Valentine's Day - An Old Fashioned Love Song. It can be found here.

https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-an-old-fashioned-love-song.245973/

This week's post may not garner the number of replies but it seemed like something we on the committee were interested in - and so we decided to go with it. The topic is mostly geared to the music collector, but it doesn't have to be. The topic is, "Add It To Your Collection."

List 5 music media items you have wanted to add to your collection. Could be CD, Digital Download or Vinyl. Heck, they could be cassette, 8-Track or 78 RPM Shellac recordings. Maybe just some LP covers to frame and hang for their artistic value. Really, whatever blows you skirt up, as our old Division Secretary used to say...

Me myself? I could list a whole bunch of rare Beatles pressings from the 1960's and use up 5 postings real quick. Like maybe a Stereo (or Mono) Yesterday and Today first state 'Butcher' cover - or the original 1962 Decca pressing of My Bonnie/The Saints with label credits to Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers. Those are definitely things I'd LIKE to own but realistically probably never will.

So instead I'll list 5 non-Beatles things that are less spendy but still have eluded my EBay bidding attempts.
___________________________

Dorothy Berry-You Better Watch Out. This was a fall 1964 release. Dorothy Berry is the wife of Richard Berry - the guy who wrote Louie, Louie. She had literally no career success as a singer but had releases on several labels. The two releases on Planetary are definitely the ones. This being my favorite. This is one of those British Northern Soul discs so in very high demand. Also of note, the song writer and producer is Dave Gates. Yes, THAT Dave Gates, who later became better known as David Gates, the lead singer of the 70's soft rock act, Bread.

Rannels-Blue Island - I just somehow stumbled across this song on YouTube maybe 10 years ago. I decided it was a MeanDean-worthy doo-wop pressing so I started searching for a copy. "Boss" was a Chicago area label. And while I've owned at least one other 45 on that label, this one doesn't come up very often. Must be very very rare. From 1963. Still, I do want that piece of vinyl.

The Five Crowns-Hillum Bay - My backstory on this one... I was at a flea market probably 20 years ago. A guy was selling 45's so I dug through and picked out some 'fer-sures' and some 'maybes'. The OTHER release by this act on this label was one I put in the maybe pile. I literally knew nothing about the act, the label or the song. They were priced $2.00 each or 6 for $10.00. I had 11 in the 'fer-sure' stack so obviously needed to select one more, since it was free. I debated for a while and ended up with the Five Crowns disc. When I got home I and looked it up in the price guide and was shocked it was listed for something like $100.00. The other disc they released on this label was booking at something like $1,000. Of course I liked the one I got but I REALLY liked this one when I listened it on YouTube. I've only seen one copy for sale ever on Ebay. It was in awful condition and I did not win the bid.

Rolling Stones-I Wanna Be Your Man/Stoned - I won't pretend to know the minute details of this release. I think it was released in early '64 before being pulled and replaced with I Wanna Be Your Man/Not Fade Away which was a minor hit (#48) here in the US. Evidently even in early '64 the title Stoned seemed a bit too edgy for the American record buying public. (In the UK there was no issue with the song.) Original US stock versions with Stoned are incredibly rare. I would settle for a promo copy which are still tough, but out there, to some extent. Interestingly enough there are two label variations of the promo single. A few years ago I decided to fill in missing Rolling Stones gaps in my collection but only the early/London label years. This remains the one single I don't have. The link below is actually the UK single B-side on the Decca label, not the US pressing on the London label that I am seeking.

Yardbirds-I Wish You Would/A Certain Girl USA Promo Picture Sleeve - This was the first Yardbirds single released in the US (August 1964). It was not a hit here and again US Stock copies are quite rare. I don't have one. But that is not actually what I'm jonesing for in this case. The Epic single was released with a black and white promotional picture sleeve that also advertised Denim Tones, a sock manufactured by Esquire Socks (Photos below) on the back cover. Another fun fact about this release - first promotional pressings list the A-Side as "I Wish You Could" as does the Picture Sleeve I want. The correct title is I Wish You Would which later pressings corrected. I do have both versions of the promo single. Just really really want the sleeve.

Perspective on the team and our fanbase

It seems like our fanbase is imploding right now, which is fine. We are a passionate fanbase that loves Cyclone Basketball. The meltdown right now has been caused by two things: 1) the opportunity to compete for a conference title is real this year, and 2) we as fans take home losses personally. The first point is obvious, Kansas is down, we have a lot of talent, we have won some games on the road we don't normally win, so if we just take care of business at home we put ourselves in a position to win the title. The second point I think is something that is real that doesn't get discussed often enough - Iowa State fans have a legitimate belief that they have a major impact on the outcome of games at Hilton. By nature, if we take credit for the team winning in an unbelievable fashion, upsetting a top opponent, or cheering the team to a huge comeback, we will also take it personally if we lose at home.

If we look back at one of the best runs in ISU history, 2011-2017, we finished with the following records/places:

11/12: 12-6, 4th place
12/13: 11-7, 4th place
13/14: 11-7, 3rd place
14/15: 12-6, Tied 2nd-3rd place
15/16: 10-8, 6th place
16/17: 12-6, Tied 2nd-4th place

Using Mred's generator and leaving all the games the rest of the way exactly how it has them picked (I believe he uses Massey ratings), we will finish 12-6 and be in 4th place in the conference this year.

It's disappointing we weren't able to make a run at a conference title, there is plenty of criticism to go around for both coaches and players, and it's alright for us to be pissed off right now, but at the end of the day if the projections hold, this team will still finish among some of the best teams we have had in recent history. From there, all we can hope for is a fun run in KC and in the NCAAs.

Now On To Baylor

Great win by us today really played well everywhere, Tucker and Wigginton looked amazing with there deep threes. Good win!

Baylor played really bad today against Texas Tech losing by 25 points. Really have not been impressed there last 4 games. Really thinking they will play good against us but I think we are better and our team has momentum.

My Prediction:
Iowa State 87
Baylor 77

Hilton Concourse changes on regents agenda

According to this article, concessions will move from interior to exterior walls, and that will allow expansion of concourses into those "former" concession areas. Not sure how that will work -- need to look around when I'm next in Hilton. Also, the new concessions will "be equipped to serve greater variety of food." I don't care as much about the variety expanding, as I do have truly hot hot chocolate and coffee, and that the creamers don't have chunks in them anymore.
https://www.inside.iastate.edu/article/2019/02/21/preview

Players looked tired. The need to lower PT to prepare for tournaments.

I have no argument that we are playing our best seven players. But now that the odds of winning the b12 have lessened, we need to rest and lower Pt to our key players to keep them fresh. Go back to rotating 10 like we did earlier in the season.

NWB has had a great year but has lost that quickness to the hoop displayed earlier in the season and his shot is struggling. Jacobson didn’t have his typical energy, his recovery on pick and rolls and his help defense looked fatigued. THT didn’t look like himself last night (Baylor). He was getting beat of the dribble multiple times.

The extra minutes to our reserves will benefit us with depth when the tournaments start. Conditt, Talley and Lewis have all shown the ability. Now is the time to get them confident and comfortable with the team.

Wigginton and Lard look to have their game legs, but they get their rest. It doesn’t matter if we go to the dance if we get nocked out in the first week.

WrestleStat Rankings - Week 16 2018-2019

Rankings have been updated, but I need to point out some changes that occurred last night.

1) Wrestlers records have been updated to reflect only Division I opponents. This was done to fall in line with the same criteria as the NCAA's RPI rankings use for the 17 match minimum.
2) Wrestlers profile pages have been updated to display both the [Division I] record, as well as the wrestlers overall record. This will show up in the Season Summaries section. The overall record will be in parenthesis. Check out Chance Marsteller's profile for an example: https://www.wrestlestat.com/wrestler/47805/marsteller-chance/profile
3) Also, on a wrestlers profile page is now the RPI. This is the last column in the Season Summaries section. Right now it's displaying the actual RPI value, but that may change or get removed since it doesn't provide much context relative to other wrestlers. Anyway, since the official RPI is based on the 17 match minimum, not everyone will have an RPI. In order to get a guage about where, approximately, a wrestlers will fall once they reach that 17 match minimum, there's a 2nd RPI value in parenthesis. This RPI is based on a 5 match minimum. For example, Stevan Micic at 133 (ranked #1) has only had 13 matches so far this year, therefore does not have an official RPI (so it shows NA), but it is showing the unofficial RPI so you can get an approximate idea of where he will land once reaching that 17 match minimum.
4) Lastly, since we're on the subject of the RPI, I went ahead and added an RPI rankings page. This page is initially sorted by the UNOFFICIAL RPI (smaller number at the far-left), but will display in bigger font the official RPI. Again, this is to give an idea where a wrestler will slot-in once they reach the 17 match minimum.

Keep in mind, I'm not 100% sure on the criteria of the RPI calculations that the NCAA uses, but I'll continue to tweak once I find out all of the details. As of right now, it's calculated like this: (25% Wrestlers Win %) + (50% Opponents Win %) + (25% Opponents Opponents Win %)

Hawaii Trip Recommendations

Taking the Family there for Spring Break. Have a couple VRBO homes lined up. Will be primarily on the Big Island and Maui, but last full day will be on Oahu.

If you have a favorite beach, thing to do, or restaurant let me know. Have heard some of the street vendors can be great.

With the way this winter is going am looking very forward to this trip!

Better watch this while you can

I guess if you are reading this, you are already a Cyclones WBB fan, but for all of us, stop and think for a minute. We are seeing something very special right now, and that is a senior WBB player who is currently 4th in all time scoring and could very well end up higher yet. She has some excellent talent around her in Scott, Middleton, Burkhall, Wise and Joens. This is also a very special team due to its chemistry. In other words, if you don't take every chance you can to see this team play, you are missing out on something that may not be repeated for many years if not decades.

Yes, I am very high on the Cyclones next year with Joens, Wise and Scott as potential stars, so our future is bright.

But I don't care how busy I am, how sick I am, how bad the weather is, I will take every opportunity to watch this team play - because the women this year are very special.
