ISU grad here but it's been years since I went out in Campustown. I am bringing a few friends from the Twin Cities this weekend and they want to go out in Ames on Friday. What are the best bars for 30+ people. We will for sure hit Welch Ave Station but what other bars in Campustown specifically are a good time for a few drinks?

In my heyday it was Dean's List, Sips, and Paddy's.

You're definitely going to campustown?

If you are willing to go elsewhere, London Underground is a good spot for a little bit older crowd. Della Viti is a neat wine bar, if they're into that sort of thing. And Cellar 626 is a hidden away, speakeasy type place. It's only open on Friday nights.

My son is a student. He claims to enjoy the less wild side of campus bars. I know he goes to Welch Ave Station and Es Tas, altho that may be his cheap side combining Taco Tuesday with free pool night.

Es Tas is definitely not a 30+ crowd.

If you must go to campustown, Welch Ave is probably your best bet. Blue Owl might be alright for you. Definitely agree that the Downtown bars (Whiskey River, London Underground, etc) are much better suited for the "older" crowd.

I won't be able to go however my buddies band, the Pork Tornadoes is playing Friday at Campustown from 6-9PM and Saturday at Cys Roost from 4-7PM. They put on a good show and if you like good live music this would be a good option for you.

I went back last year, and had a better time at the downtown bars. The Welch Ave. bars are just too dirty and packed, and UNI students will be there too/first game weekend, it will be a mess. You could hit Welch Ave Station early and head to downtown. Whiskey River was a fun spot. Met a lot of Texas Tech fans.

You should have your buddy take advantage of the phenomenon and change the band name to Pork Sharknadoes.

Be prepared to feel really old really fast if you plan on going to Campustown. I went to Sips and Paddys just a few years after graduating and it had a markedly different feel.

If your set on going my brother preferred the Blue Owl because it was a little more chill.

Blue Owl, Welch Ave Station, Cafe B; then head over to West St for Thumbs and Mothers Pub. Might be live music at Mothers.

Consider a Somerset area food/drink crawl; perfect for old timers. Dinner, dessert, and drinks at The Cafe; walk down to +39 for wine; walk over to El Azteca for margaritas and chips, then go next door to Wallaby's for more drinks.

For nostalgia's sake, I also have to throw out an endorsement of the Long Islands at Cafe B, though the real tragedy is that you can't get them for $5 (tip included!) like when I was a senior... getting old is rough.

Try downtown multiple bars, two breweries and several foodoptions within a few blocks walk. Plus you could always grab aride on the bus if you still wanted to go out in campus town.

I remember Fridays at Welch were 2 for $5 Long Islands. That wasn't that long ago. 10 years maybe? (Damn, that is a long time ago)

I'm in my 30's and Welch Ave Station is the only bar that even remotely interests me on campus town. And just like the OP.... Sips, Paddy's and Dean's List were my top 3 in college.

Oh Thumbs. Forgot about Thumbs. Go to Thumbs.
