NOTEBOOK: ISU's defense comes up big, Matt Campbell sounds off on the color black

Voices from the Stands and Week - Dublin edition

Think this one would be a good one for this week. I have a few I’ll share but I’ll start with just one for now….

Random drunk Irish guy comes up during the beginning of the 3rd quarter and starts chatting our row up.

“I was rooting for the purple team because I was sat over there but no one wanted to talk much football over there and you guys in the red seem to care more”

Proceeds to ask questions about the game and rules and whatnot. Several fans helping and just having a good time.

After the TD we had in the 3rd he loudly proclaims some gibberish I couldn’t hear well about the pass and then a “GO CYCLONES! GO BIG RED!”

The second part had about the entire section including the 2 KState fans start waving and shaking their head like “NO NO NO don’t say that second part!” Then someone was kind enough to explain what the hell a Nebraska was lol

He literally went and bought an Iowa State Aer Lingus shirt right then though. I should’ve taken a picture with him. Good guy and all the ISU fans were very kind to him and his questions.

Maybe a fan for life after that?

What other stories you got from the game or during the week in and around Dublin/Ireland?

POSTGAME with CW: Analyzing ISU’s 24-21 win over K-State

Iowa State kicked off the 2025 college football season on Saturday with a 24-21 win over Kansas State in Dublin. Chris Williams broke it all down for you immediately following the game. Presented by Channel Seed.

Enjoy this one! We'll find out tonight if there is any beer left in Ireland.

Over and By

Got Moss?

I admit, I almost choked this week when someone, talking about the wideouts, posted, “We don’t have a Randy Moss!”

Honest! I hadn’t thought about it that way, but…uh, yeah, we kinda do? At least, for ISU.

I had to dig deeper on that. Moss was measured at 6’3.6” 175 on his Marshall pro day. Reputedly, he ran a 4.25 40 and had a 47” vertical.

Looking earlier, he ran a 10.94 100m to win the West Virginia State Track meet—as a 15 year old sophomore. Later, he ran a 21.15 200m indoors on the Marshall track team.

Our nascent Moss comp?

Dom Overby is listed at 6’5” 200, while the coaches are saying he’s “almost 6’5”.

Moreover, he ran a 10.54 100m as a 17 year old senior—and a 20.91 200m

For comparison’s sake, the two fastest forty times by Cyclones were Kene Nwangwu (reported 4.28, official 4.31) and Darien Porter (official 4.30)

Among other HS marks, Kene ran a 10.54 100m(w), a 21.94 200m and had a 24’5” LJ.

Porter was a 400m specialist, with a state record of 46.99, but also had a 10.68 100m and a 21.69 200m

For comparison to all of those, Overby had an official 10.54 100m, a 20.91 200m, a 46.81 400m, and a 24’7” LJ(w).

Also competed in the 800m, javelin, discus, shot put…decathlete much, young man?

Anyway, Dom was actually faster than Randy at the 200m, and his HS marks match or exceed our two fastest Cyclones at the same stage, so…maybe he has a chance to go under 4.30 when that time comes?

In short, Dom is about to be ISU’s Moss. Which is only fair, since Randy spent so much time jumping OVER and running BY defenders. He DOM-inated.

Puns. It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta to do it!

And, oh yeah. Brett Eskildsen actually ran a 10.52 in HS.

Lastly, when you look at lists of legendary NFL speedburners? Just see how many are listed with 10.5 HS track times.

And ‘25 recruits and current ‘26 commits have those same types of athletic traits.

Yep. After years of struggling, our HS WR recruiting is doing just fine now.

Now, sit back and watch Dom start jumping over and running by folks today.

Go Cyclones!

Kickin' It

Is there not going to be another season of Kickin' It?

I know when they signed off on the last one they said that iteration was going to be done. I assumed Grant was going to step away.

My assumption was that Jeff and Jake would be doing the next season.

If that wasn't the case I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed. I thought the show was great and it was a regular part of my week.

DAILY CLONE: Campbell Speaks, Fans Take Over Dublin

Check out today's Daily Clone from Jake Brend.
He dives in the inside of downtown Dublin to show the Cyclone takeover on the Emerald Island. Matt Campbell and Chris Klieman press conference highlights. Campbell talks about the buzz of the game and Trevor Buhr’s illness. Plus, the Cyclone Rugby Club played in Dublin and Brend took a trip into the countryside! Tons of great stuff as usual.

***2025 Iowa High School Football***

Since the IowaPreps forums died with the move from Rivals to On3, and the BEDS thread is mostly conference realignment, here's a season thread.

Week 0 kicks off tonight. Scrimmages across the majority of the state, but there are a half-dozen actual real countable games in 8-man.

Three schools have already called off their seasons due to low numbers, so 8-man will have 66 teams instead of 69.
