Iowa State offensive linemen Wade and Brent Helton are entering the transfer portal. Bill Seals of Rivals was the first to report the news.
The Helton’s, who are twins that were recruited out of California by offensive line coach Ryan Clanton, were expected to see the field this year after each of them redshirted a season ago.
The twins were the first players that Clanton brought up when asked about who would fill the three interior positions on the offensive line last week in a press conference.
“Both the Helton’s have done a really good job,” Clanton said. “(We’ve) been teaching them how to play center and guard on the inside, and obviously that’s helped a ton.”
Iowa State will turn to the rest of its offensive line room, and hope that there’s been enough depth created there during Clanton’s time in Ames.
And he’s confident about quite a few players there.
“Trevor Buhr, he’s a dog,” Clanton said. “Dylan Barrett, he’s a dog – that’s healthy now. And then you have Garrett Rutledge, from Council Bluffs. That kid – you put him at guard and he’ll run through somebody’s face. He’s stone cold, the way we like them around here.
“And then there’s Brendan Black and Jim (Bonifas),” Clanton said. “Jim is 320 pounds. He’s the smartest guy on the team – he knows the offense better than maybe some other people – he has like a coaching understanding of the offense. And Brendan Black is like a freight train on the inside.”
Iowa State continues its spring practices throughout the rest of this week.
