WBB: Cyclones devour TCU, set up pivotal home matchup against OU Saturday

After Iowa State started Wednesday’s road matchup with TCU with a 15-2 lead, there was little doubt that the Cyclones would leave Fort Worth with a 6-2 Big 12 record.

The team had no issues rolling past a young, and winless in the Big 12, TCU squad that hasn’t been able to find its footing, winning 75-35.

It was one of the best defensive performances by Iowa State this season.

“Obviously you don’t get many games like this in the Big 12,” Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. “I think defensively, similar to what we did with KU, we were really good… I thought everyone contributed. We didn’t play a lot of kids a lot of minutes and that’s good.”

Iowa State only allowed TCU a single field goal on the defensive side of the ball in the third quarter, while they were putting the game away.

The Horned Frogs tallied the 3-pointer and two free throws and scored just five points in the entire frame.

It put the game out of reach.

“We just have to buy into what the coaches say,” Joens said on the Cyclone Radio Network. “They do an amazing job giving us a detailed, personal scouting report.”

The win gives Iowa State a 14-4 record on the year overall and sets up a big game against Oklahoma on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.

The winner of the game will go home with at least a share of first place in the Big 12 standings at the midway mark of the season.

“(That was) a game that everyone thought we should win with what’s coming up,” Fennelly said. “But you can’t take those for granted. Not in the Big 12.”

Saturday’s game against Oklahoma at Hilton Coliseum will tip off at 3:00 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN+.
