In a couple weeks during National early signing day, Iowa State will sign its 2023 football recruiting class, which contains the second highest-rated recruit in program history in quarterback J.J. Kohl.

As an Ankeny product and son of former Iowa State kicker Jamie Kohl, J.J. is well accustomed to Iowa State.

“I’m really excited,” Kohl said. “I’ve been looking forward to it for a really long time now and I’m just excited to make it official.”

Newly named offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase helped recruit the prospect to Ames, along with quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon.

Kohl’s excited about the move.

“Coach Scheelhaase is someone I’m really excited for,” Kohl said. “He’s there for a reason and I think he’s going to do some really cool things at Iowa State. I’m excited to work with him.”

Kohl spent some of his time after committing by making relationships with other players considering committing to Iowa State, like high school teammate Jamison Patton.

“It’s pretty cool – some of the relationships I’ve been able to build with this,” Kohl said. “These are going to be my teammates and I can’t wait to make a lot of memories with them and do some special things at Iowa State.”

Kohl will sign his letter of intent during early signing day on December 21, 2022.

In the meantime the conversations have surrounded what his first year in Ames will look like.

“A lot of the conversations have been about what it’s going to look like in terms of practices, training and everything else when I get up there,” Kohl said.
