RECRUITING: JJ Kohl narrowing choices after Iowa State visit

Iowa State hosted just about a dozen targets for its 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes on Saturday in Ames, culminating with the men’s basketball game against TCU.

The staff hopes one of them will be the next great signal-caller at the school in Ankeny native J.J. Kohl.

The four-star quarterback holds offers from Iowa State, Iowa, Boston College, Minnesota, Missouri, and Florida State, so far.

“I would say Iowa State is really high up there,” Kohl said of his potential future schools. “I really like what Coach Campbell is doing with the program. I feel like the whole coaching staff at Iowa State genuinely wants me to lead their program.”

Kohl was joined by a number of other in-state prospects the Cyclones have their eyes on.

That included Des Moines Roosevelt ATH Jamison Patton.

“When we got there, I was immediately able to talk to all of the coaches and check up with them,” Kohl said. “I’m really good friends with Jamison Patton, so I got to talk to him, and I got to meet some other guys as well.”

Kohl led Ankeny High to the Class 4A state championship game during the 2021 high school football season, throwing 25 touchdowns to just four interceptions.

He sat down with Campbell following the basketball game.

“After the TCU game I got to sit down with Coach Campbell for 45 minutes and he answered some of my questions and my mom’s as well.”

Kohl tells CycloneFanatic that he plans on committing in the spring, but the date will remain to be determined.

“Commitment-wise I’m planning on committing this spring, whether that’s in March or its in May,” Kohl said.
