Iowa State rolls over Western Michigan in Tre King’s debut

Iowa State’s starters had no issues getting out to an early lead on Western Michigan, going on a 17-3 run in the first nine minutes of Sunday’s 73-57 win over Western Michigan.

It helped open up space for Tre King to check into a game for Iowa State for the first time, 382 days after committing to play at the school.

“He did a really good job,” coach T.J. Otzelberger said of King. “We talked to him about being a guy we can throw it in to, being a great cutter like he did on the baseline on that dunk… He’s worked really hard to get this opportunity. It’s been a while.”

Caleb Grill finished with team highs collecting 14 points and six rebounds in the game.

“We pride ourselves a lot on the defensive end,” Grill said. “Just being to help our defense from the start helped me.”

Gabe Kalscheur rounded out his day with 11 points and three assists, while Robert Jones finished with 10 points and five assists.

The win gives Iowa State a 9-2 record on the season.

Iowa State will return to the court for its final game before Big 12 play starts on Wednesday, taking on Omaha at Hilton Coliseum (6:00 p.m. ESPN+).
