Cyclone Wrestling Adds Three on Signing Day

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling program and head coach Kevin Dresser announced the addition of three prep wrestlers Wednesday. Tate Naaktgeboren, McCrae Hagarty and Blake Gioimo – all Iowa high school products – make up the Cyclones’ 2023 class and are set to arrive on campus for the 2023-24 season.

“On behalf of our team and our staff, we want to welcome these three young men to Iowa State wrestling,” Dresser said. “We’re excited to watch these guys in their senior year and then watch them transition into college life over the summer. Tate and McCrae bring multiple state titles along with national-level accolades and will add a lot of strength to our upper weights. Blake is a lightweight guy who we feel has a lot of potential. I am sure we will add a few more to this class in the near future but this is a great start.”

Here’s a look at the new additions:

Tate Naaktgeboren
Hometown: Marion, Iowa
High School: Linn-Mar
Projected Weight Class: 184 pounds
Naaktgeboren will join the Cyclones next fall after an outstanding prep career at Linn-Mar High School. A three-time finalist with two class 3A state titles to his name (2021, 2022), Naaktgeboren projects as a 184-pounder for the Cyclones. He is tabbed as the No. 19 overall prospect in the 2023 class by MatScouts and the No. 6 182-pounder nationally by FloWrestling. With a senior season still to wrestle, Naaktgeboren has an outstanding 96-5 high school record, including a 44-2 mark last year.

McCrae Hagarty
Hometown: Waverly, Iowa
High School: Waverly Shell-Rock
Projected Weight Class: 197 pounds
Hagarty is another accomplished Iowa High School product and will join the Cyclones from Waverly Shell-Rock High School where he has won a pair of team state championships. Hagarty will enter his final high school season with a 117-8 career record, including 82-1 over the last two seasons. He is a three-time Class 3A state medalist, placing fourth as a freshman before winning consecutive titles at 182 pounds and 195 pounds as a sophomore and junior, respectively. Hagarty is also a 16U All-American in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He is ranked by MatScouts as the No. 59 overall prospect in the country and is the No. 11 195-pounder nationally by FloWrestling.

Blake Gioimo
Hometown: Fairfax, Iowa
High School: Cedar Rapids Prairie
Projected Weight Class: 125 pounds
Gioimo slots as one of Iowa’s top lightweight wrestling prospects and will join the Iowa State wrestling program from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. Gioimo is a two-time Class 3A state finalist at 106 pounds and 113 pounds, respectively. He has a 62-2 record over the last two seasons. Gioimo, who projects at 125 pounds for the Cyclones, was also 16U national dual team last season after finishing second at the 16U freestyle state championships. He is ranked No. 3 in IAwrestle’s 120-pound Class 3A preseason rankings.
