WBB: Ashley Joens named to preseason AP All-American team

The following is a press release from Iowa State Athletics Communications:

AMES, Iowa – For the first time in Iowa State women’s basketball history, the Cyclones will have an AP Preseason All-American, as star senior Ashley Joens was named to the five-player team announced on Tuesday morning.

This adds to Joens’ continuing collection of preseason accolades, as she has already been named the 2022-23 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team and the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List, the prize to the nation’s top small forward which she is the two-time defending winner.

The Iowa City native returns for a fifth season at Iowa State having helped lead the Cyclones to a program-record 28 wins in 2021-22 and the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2010.ADVERTISING

Joens is Iowa State’s all-time leading scorer, entering the season with 2,369 career points. Last season saw her named a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press and USBWA along with being named to the WBCA All-America Team.

She is one of the players helping lead the Cyclones into one of the program’s most anticipated seasons in program history, with Iowa State checking in at No. 8 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll and being chosen by the league’s coaches in first place in the Big 12 Preseason Poll.

Iowa State will make its first appearance in Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday, Nov. 2 for an exhibition against Winona State prior to the regular season kickoff against Cleveland State on Monday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at Hilton.
