MILWAUKEE — For the first time since 2016, and one year after winning only two games, Iowa State is going to the Sweet 16.
Behind a 22-point performance from senior guard Gabe Kalscheur and a clinical defensive effort, the 11-seed Cyclones upset third-seeded Wisconsin, 54-49, on Sunday at the Fiserv Forum. Iowa State will play the winner of the ongoing game between Auburn and Miami in Chicago on Friday.
Kalscheur carried Iowa State’s offense for nearly the entire night, connecting on 10-of-19 shots from the field and 1-of-4 from deep while adding four rebounds.
Izaiah Brockington was the only other Iowa State scorer in double figures with 10 points.
The biggest star of the night was the Cyclones’ defense, which held Wisconsin to 29.8 percent shooting from the field, 9.9 percent from 3-point range and forced 17 turnovers. The Badgers finished the game with more turnovers than made baskets (17 vs. 14).
