Iowa State takes down West Virginia in Hilton Coliseum

Cyclone fans filled Hilton Coliseum with cheers and standing ovations as Iowa State Wrestling defeated Big 12 for West Virginia 31-9 on Friday.

The dual had an ominous start with back-to-back losses that silenced Hilton’s high energy but that quickly changed when 165 pounder Marcus Coleman stepped on the mat.

All it took was one minute and 14 seconds for Coleman to get the job done.

“He’s chosen to separate himself, which is something he’s never done in the past,” said head coach Kevin Dresser. “When he gets a guy that maybe not highly ranked, that he’s supposed to dominate, he really goes out and not only wins the match but he gets the pin and gets those bonus points. He’s a pinner.”

Luckily for Dresser, the redshirt senior announced he’s returning for a sixth season.

Another standout win that brought the Hilton Coliseum crowd to their feet was 125 pounder Kysen Terukina’s upset of No. 5 Killian Cardinale 6-5. This marks his second-straight win over a top-6 opponent.

“I see he’s starting to win off the mat and out of the room,” Dresser said. “He’s figuring out that “I have to go to bed at night and I have to manage my weight consistently” ya know, the little things. There are a lot of little things and there are a lot of little choices that athletes make every day that can either help or hurt you. I think he’s made a lot of really good choices so he feels good out there.”

The Hawaii native was feeling good as he raised both hands in celebration after securing the takedown that decided the match with a minute left.

“I know I should be beating these guys. It feels good to know that what I’m doing is paying off,” Terukina said. “I just look at these people like they’re normal people just like me so they’re nothing special. I can beat these guys. I should be beating them. It just feels good to reassure that my training is paying off.”

The momentum never stopped for the Cyclones. They tallied 30 takedowns compared to West Virginia’s four.

Yonger Bastida had the most of the night, racking up 10 total in his match up against Jackson Moomau.

Iowa State’s win over the Mountaineers marks that their 10th straight dual win, the second-longest in the nation.

The Cyclones will have a tight turnaround as they host Air Force on Saturday at noon to close out their home dual matches of the season.

“We got the win and took care business, but it’s a short turnaround. So we have to be ready to go tomorrow,” Coleman said.
