RECRUITING: Townsend decommits from Iowa State

Iowa State lost one of its key commitments on Sunday with the start of the early signing period looming.

Four-star athlete Xavier Townsend announced his decommitment from Matt Campbell’s via Twitter Sunday evening. The early signing period for the 2022 class opens on Wednesday.

Townsend was one of the highest-rated players in Iowa State’s 2022 class that is considered one of the top-30 classes nationally. He rose to being the No. 238 player nationally and No. 29 player in Florida in the latest 247Sports rankings update.

Iowa State landed Townsend’s commitment back in July after he officially visited Ames in June. He chose Iowa State over other finalists UCF, Louisville and Vanderbilt. The Tampa, Fla. native visited UCF on Nov. 20.

The Cyclones now have 18 commitments in their 2022 recruiting class, including Florida defensive back Terrell Crosby, who committed to Iowa State on Sunday.
