WBB: Cyclones shoot around Penn State, advance to Gulf Coast Title

For the first 28 minutes, Iowa State’s women’s basketball team’s succesful field goals came from guards for 3’s and post players for 2’s.

It was an abnormal game at Hertz Arena for the team, which won 93-59, routing Penn State in the Gulf Coast Showcase Semifinals.

The thing was, the Cyclones didn’t need anything else.

Penn State’s defense allowed a plethora of 3-point attempts, and put the clamps down when the guards came in to shoot.

Iowa State ended the game tying a school record with 18 3-pointers on the night.

It lead to an amount of layups for post players Morgan Kane and Beatriz Jordao. The pair combined for 24 points and 10 rebounds.

It was the latest chapter of this team, that showcased it’s strengths almost to a fault.

Aubrey Joens lead the team with 21 points, all of which came on 3-point field goals. She added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double.

The win pushes Iowa State to a 6-0 record to start the season, matching the men’s team’s mark that saw it winning the Preseason NIT Tip Off championship on Friday night over No. 9 Memphis.

Iowa State is one of eight schools with its men’s and women’s basketball teams being undefeated, following the win. The other seven schools as of the time of this being written are Arizona, BYU, Colorado State, Duke, Iowa, Utah, and Wake Forest.

Iowa State will advance to the Gulf Coast Showcase championship game on Sunday, facing UMASS at 6:30 p.m. CT on FloHoops.
